The 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Series is available in three models - E300 Diesel, E320 and E420. The sedans are manufactured in Sindelfingen, Germany, with a new standard five speed automatic transmission. The transmission has a second reverse gear for winter conditions. All new for this year is the E420 sedan, exclusive with an optional Sport package. The Sport package comes equipped with performance tires, sculpted front air dampener, side skirts and a rear apron. For 1997, all exterior paints are environmentally safe. The E-class enters this model year with minimal changes from last years model. The E-Class is available in the E320, E320 AWD, E430, E430 AWD, E320 wagon and E320 AWD wagon. The E300 Turbo Diesel sedan is no longer available. All models are now equipped with Head Protection Curtains that cover the front and rear side windows in the event of a side collision. The dual automatic climate control in the E-Class is equipped with a REST mode which provides the passenger compartment with heat up to 30 minutes after the engine has been shut off. Standard equipment includes anti-lock brakes, 10-way power seats, the Smart Key System and a power sunroof. An optional COMMAND system, which integrates the navigation system, radio, CD and cell phone, is an available option. Less

Merc S600L - The World's Best Car?

Pros: This new executive model from Mercedes is definitely worth a look. Sheer, unashamed luxury.

Cons: Not many!!

The Bottom Line: This is one of the finest and most refined executive saloons on the market.

Review: ~ ~ The Mercedes S600L sets the standard that other manufacturers in the luxury car bracket must now try to emulate.
It competes directly against the other German flagship, the BMW 750iL, and also against the Audi A8 4.2 quattro.
