The Yamaha DV-S5770 is a bargain basement universal player which performs well beyond its price point.
The player is unexpectedly light and a little disappointing in its finish (the brushed aluminum front plant is not a tight fit), but I got it for its playback ability rather than cosmetics.
I got this player for its music ability, because I have a DVD recorder that isn't made for high-quality musical playback. For $250, I am all smiles.
After 48 hours of burn in, the player offers brilliant detail on CD and SACD. I haven't tried any DVD-Audio discs yet, but the pattern is there. This is a fine music machine.
The DVD side of the player is equally competent, especially in component video mode.
If you don't want to spend the kind of money required — or don't have the resources to spend on a high-end universal player — this Yamaha is a great entry point for high definition audio.
