Author's Review

Woman’s World, The Woman’s Weekly.

Many of you, especially those who do the grocery shopping, I’m sure spot this magazine at the checkout counter, right alongside the tabloids. For those who haven’t read this magazine yet, this is one neat little magazine. I’ve been buying it for years basically because I “really” enjoy it, mainly because it offers quite a bit of information for the small price of $1.25

The format is the same every week. The cover has these eye-catching phrases. For example this afternoon as I piled groceries onto the conveyor belt, I looked up and started to read things like, “You can be slim by spring! Drop 24 pounds in 30 days!” I may not want to lose 24 pounds, but 10 wouldn’t hurt. And it gives the name of the celebrity that has done just that—Julie Moran. Other phrases were, “All-day Stress Relief, An Innovative new plan.” Or “Look great in a miniskirt!” (Sorry guys this is a chick’s magazine.) Or “Amazing 3-week leg makeover.” Well, spring is almost here, and summer not far behind, so I grabbed for the issue and added it to the items on the conveyor belt.

When I got home, I put the groceries away, made a cup of tea, and sat down to read this magazine.

I found tips on financial info inside. “The brand-new way to Turn a profit on your taxes!” Basically innovative ways on how we can use our refund check (for those who are getting one that is.)

There are also short inspirational pieces where contributors can relate their “precious” memories and moments. WW will pay $50 to $250 for these. Actually Woman’s World provides six topics—Real Life Stories--where contributors can submit their personal accounts. One human-interest story centered on twins reunited after 70 years. Another was about a junior push-up queen, an eight-year old third grader who could do 750 Military-style pushups.

In every week’s edition there’s a nice two-page spread on fashion. This week’s theme revolved around the “Wonderful new spring classics!” Here they let us know what’s hot, or not. Floral, gingham and animal prints are in and cargo pants are no longer in style. Which goes to show you how fast fashion changes. I no sooner learn these cargo pants were fashionable and thinking about buying myself a pair. So I guess I won’t even bother now.

There is a two-page spread found in every issue on “Your Good Looks.” This week shows how to turn our shower into a beauty spa. Then gives recipes for hair, face, and body. For instance, using mashed bananas to add shine to hair. or cornmeal and olive to “hydrate” our hands. Also how to get rid of puffy eyes while taking a shower. (Wished I known that the other day when I looked at myself in the mirror in the ladies room at Barnes & Nobel. Don’t you love those fluorescent lights that emphasize every single flaw?) A surprise lip smoother is none other than a smidgen of hair conditioner across your lips, then wiped with off with a washcloth? I guess worth a try. There’s a nifty tip here on how to give an anti-cellulite massage using a nylon sponge and sea salt. Again, worth a try and just in time for summer.

I usually enjoy reading the Your Good Health section, which deals with health issues. In this latest issue we find out seven little health clues that can save lives, such as taking replacement hormones, eating salads, upping E-rich diets, etc. which will help us combat diseases such as osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes. Also given here is an online lifesaver addy for “overworked women” www.papsmear.org. Log on here, record when you should book your next Pap test, and you will receive an e-mail to remind you to schedule your next appointment.

Next section tells us how to become a contestant on “Who Want to Be A Millionaire? I skimmed through this section as my interest in that show has waned over the past month.

I especially like the food and nutrition sections. In this latest issue I discovered tofu minestrone soup, which I’m going to have to try. I buy packages of tofu with good intentions to incorporate this food into my diet. But right now I have two unopened packages inside my refrigerator that have been there for some time. And since I don’t remember when I purchased them, I’m going to have to throw them out. But still, I want to try it in some recipe where it can be disguised. And this soup looks like the answer. I’m sure among the red potatoes, onions, fennel, diced tomatoes, frozen mixed vegetable, parsley and crusty bread slices, I will no longer have unopened packages of Tofu lying in my fridge. If I make it this week, I’ll even leave a comment on this review saying how it came out.

Decorating tips, household tips, shopping tips, travel tips and craft tips are offered throughout the pages of this magazine.

Also Woman’s World offers short-fiction stories, a mini-romance and a mini-mystery. Contributors who get published here are paid well for these stories that are no more than two pages and one page respectively.

This particular issue ends with a Happy Ending story that truly captured my heart. A pregnant woman experiences severe abdominal pains throughout her pregnancy and although the sonogram reveals a fibroid tumor, but nothing more than that, and everything appears normal. When it is time to deliver, the woman received an epidural and is awake during the delivery. The uterus ruptures and the woman hemorrhages. It turns out the baby had developed not inside the uterus but inside the abdominal cavity! This was an ectopic pregnancy, which usually can be fatal for the mother, and the fibroid tumor had not only hidden the developing fetus but had nourished it. The adorable little girl was a true miracle, meant to come into this world.

This magazine offers so much in way of entertainment, information, and inspiration, I can’t say enough about it except I look forward to getting it every single week. What’s especially nice is there are no more than six ads in the entire issue.

A great buy for the price.
