Author's Review
URU, When I got the game, I was incredibly excited! It was a while before any Myst games were released and I thought after Exile, there might not be any more, little did I know.
URU follows a separate story line from the Myst saga, we now speak with Atrus' Daughter, Yeesha (Atrus is the Main character) in finding out what happened to the D'Ni society, or the people who write the books. (if you have never played Myst, I suggest you do)
I got this because of coarse, I love Myst! Wanted to see the yet again, new worlds they could create and all else. What did they create? A masterpiece!
I Loved everything about URU, this game was made to try and incorporate different types of gamers by using a sophisticated graphics engine to produce fully explorable worlds. Ever play a First Person Shooter? The movement is the same in this game, you have a forward key, backward key, strafes and a few other minor options, easy to use especially in comparison to some other games.
Beyond the now complete mobility to explore to beautiful worlds the software developers create, you have the worlds themselves, and allow me to say, some of these worlds are the best they have made, and the soundtrack goes with it! There is one scene or book, where you find a bunch of solution to an ago, when you link there, you are immersed in a beautiful cathedral like place, and the music that plays made me stare at the computer screen, feeling like I was standing there myself, immersed completely with the game.
Now, graphics and game play are excellent, what about the story? Well, if you have played any of the Myst saga and ever wondered where it all began, who made the original linking Books, then get this game! You learn so much about the world of the D'Ni, an ancient race able to write books to link to different realities.
Icing on the cake is that you have whats called a "rhelto" or an age you can link to at any time, and its like your home. You can get "add on" pages for it so it will add trees, a dock, weather, night and day, and other things. Well thought out.
And finally, the "happy birthday" on the cake, you know the part everyone goes for first, is that you create a character and can view them in third person, or first person. You choose from a small selection of wardrobe, and massively unique face, made by sliders, colors graphs, etc.
All together, excellent game, although the URU Live fell on its face (I as well as many other gamers are not fond of paying a monthly subscription as well as the price of the game). They released so far (1/11/2007) two expansion packs, one is free called "To D'Ni" which is also well worth the download, it adds the great zero and more of the actual city D'Ni itself, as well as your "ki" and more Rhelto pages.
Then they released Path of the shell, which I have HEARD bad reviews on and have yet to play. This game also encourages a lot more exploring with slightly more simpler puzzles than the following Myst. If you like seeing what creators can come up with for new worlds, hear beautiful music, and love to explore uncharted worlds, what are you waiting for?
