Go with the Pathfinder

Date of Review: Aug 31, 2000

This Toyota is a nice SUV, but it does not even come close to a Nissan Pathfinder. I test-drove a V6 automatic 4Runner, and was pretty disappointed. Compared to the Nissan, the Toyota has 53 less horsepower and 40 less lb-ft of torque. And do not even get me started on the 150-hp base engine! It is a joke for an SUv that weighs 4100 lbs.
The 183-hp V6's acceleration is slower than the Nissan by about 2 seconds, and the ride is not as smooth. The one good area of the 4Runner is its off road capability. The SUV has a decent ride, and fine comfort, although its top heavy and has body roll in tight turns. The sound system is decent, but in last place compared to the Pathfinder's Bose audio package. The styling is nice, but could have been better, and some people might find it outdated. Since the Nissan was restyled two years ago, it has better looks. The 4Runner is again, for Toyota fans who want quality and durability, but you can get all that and much more in a new Nissan Pathfinder.
