Author's Review
We recently purchased The Simpsons Complete Second Season DVD, and are very happy with the four-DVD set. The main reason this set was purchased over the first season's set is that this set includes the very first Treehouse of Horror Halloween episode. This episode includes the guest voice of James Earl Jones narrating the Simpsons version of "The Raven."
Other episodes in this fantastic second season include classic Simpsons such as "Itchy & Scratchy & Marge" where Marge starts a campaign against violence in cartoons (oh, the irony), "Lisa's Substitute" where she falls for her teacher (which also marks the debut of Ralph Wiggum), and "Bart the Daredevil" when he tries to jump Springfield Gorge with his skateboard.
Even though I consider this season markedly better in appearance than the first season, it is still interesting to see and hear the characters voices and appearance are slightly different than they are today. Matt Groening has done an amazing job with this show for so many years, it's unbelievable that it first aired over 12 years ago.
The DVDs are excellent. The picture and sound are great quality. The DVDs came packaged in a unique fold-in book type packaging within another box, not the simple black plastic package most DVDs come in. A small, but nice touch to this boxed set.
Another opinion I read stated the "game" at the beginning with the spinning heads had to be played until won before you were able to start the DVD. However, all that needs to be done is to hit your "menu" button (or similar button on your specific remote) and it brings you to the disc menu, bypassing the game. Regarding the menu, the one annoyance that I have is that there is no "play all" or "continual play" option on the set. You have to select the episode you want to watch and choose play for each episode, which gets a bit tiring when you have to do this every 25 minutes instead of having the option of having them play straight through.
All in all, it's a wonderful set of DVDs and we will definitely be purchasing the other seasons. A must for any fan of the show. Only parents of very young children may have a problem with the show, as the occasional mild swearing might pose a problem if your kids are at that "mimicking" age.
