Good Value for the Money

Is it as sharp as the Nikon 28-70 - no way. As Clear and Brilliant as the Nikon 28-70 No Way. But, at 1/4 the cost, it is a good starter lens.

It seemed to hold it's 2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range. It is built a bit cheap (but better than most Nikon zooms except the high end ones).

I did not know how dull and lifeless the images out of this lens were until I tried the Nikon 28-70. (Kind of like a Denny's steak tastes good until you go to Ruth's Chris).

I thought there was a sharpness issue with the lens, and I sent it to Tamron for repair - 4 weeks later I got the lens back - but they said it was all in specs.

Another big plus is this lens is lightweight. At $400 you will not worry about dropping the lens, and it is cheap enough to bring on-location, or become your primary lens without any worries.

I like the warranty - I believe it is now 6 years.

The lens is smooth enough - although with it's plastic construction, I am not sure how well it will hold up in winter or hot desert conditions.

I don't think you will be disappointed with this lens, but don't think it will focus fast. It also does a lot of hunting in low light situations, other than that - it is an average lens. I believe the less-than-perfect multi-coatings add to the dull image quality.
