Author's Review
Mother and daughter relationships are the hardest relationships. Whether you are the daughter or the mother, youll enjoy this book, Summer Island.
Its a wonderful narrative about a grown daughters relationship with her mother. Ruby is a struggling comedian in LA. She hates her mother who abandoned her and her sister Caroline when Ruby was 16. Her mother Nora has become a famous talk show/advise columnist in Washington. Nora who has been upheld as a high moral person, is suddenly exposed by the tabloids. They show pictures of Nora and a man in a compromising position, while Nora was married to Rubys father. Ruby is approached by the tabloids to do a tell all on her own mother. She decides to do it. Meanwhile, Nora is injured in a car accident and needs someone to care for her. Caroline, Rubys sister, assigns Ruby to take care of their mother at their summer house.
Ruby agrees, thinking shell get more dirt on her mother.
While at the lake house, they meet up with old summer friends. Rubys first love Dean and his dying brother Eric. Nora has been in contact with Eric. Ruby hadnt seen Dean since she left him some 15 years ago.
The author does a fabulous job pulling all the emotions of mother and daughter angst. Im grown up and dont need a mother, to I need someone to hold me and love me. The author also does a super job with first love, lost love, forgotten love.
This is a fabulous book, that will make you cry, laugh, see yourself, see your mother. It will enlighten you that mothers arent saints, daughters try to hard for their mothers approvals. Youll enjoy the humor that is thread throw out this book. It has a great ending, that I wont reveal. Characters, full of depth, warmth and humor. An excellent book.
