Realism to the extreme
Date of Review: Jan 2, 2002
The Bottom Line: Offers continual pleasure of stalking prey for half an hour and blowing them out of the water but there is a lack of plot to follow all the campains through.
Sub command allows you to take control of one of three modern submarines (thats kind of the obvious bit), the catch is it allows you to take complete control of every station, this includes radar, periscope, sonar, TMA (target motion analysis) etc.
Being in control of everything is great, but be warned, it is taken to the tedious extreme, for instance continually marking contacts on the radar screen to staring for ages at blank sonar read outs.
The game basically consists of tracking your opponent/prey for a long time trying to get a lock on their speed, course etc. in the TMA station. Then all thats left us to loose some torpedoes in their direction.
Graphics and sound - are not essential to the playing of the game, but are OK anyway. Sound consists of all the usual "Dive Dive" shouts to sonar pings, and the periscope shows a choppy sea and potential targets fine.
Online multiplay - is the weak part of the game, in that I haven't got it to work yet, but I know others that have and speculate that sitting around for half an hour tracking each other doesn't quite make an instant quake 3 deathmatch treat.
