Author's Review
As a child, I had the collection of Strawberry Shortcake and her friends. Of course, I don't remember her being such a sweet sappy little thing, but hey - I probably was too! Now if only I had saved all of my Strawberry stuff.............
Prepare to take a trip back to the 80's as you meet Strawberry Shortcake and her friends all over again. She is back and all little girls seem to be drawn to her.
One of my daughter's friends brought a Strawberry Shortcake video to show and tell at daycare one day shortly before Christmas last year. It was then that my daughter declared she wanted a Strawberry Shortcake video and a doll for Christmas.
So, I decided to purchase Meet Strawberry Shortcake to help her learn - and help me remember - all of the characters.
Be warned - the video case is strawberry scented. My little girl loves it - it nauseates me!
The video is about 45 minutes long and introduces Strawberry and her little sister Apple Dumplin' as they get ready to celebrate Apple's "Berry 1st Birthday". It takes you on a journey through Strawberry Land in search of party supplies. Taking the journey with them are Custard the Cat and Pupcake the Dog. Custard is a snooty little thing, which I think is cute and very typical cat! During the day they meet Angel Cake, Ginger Snap, Orange Blossom, Huckleberry Pie and Honey the Pony. Of course there's a lesson involved too - they learn about the values of friendship, helping each other and to accept others and their differences.
Strawberry is a little different from the 80's version. No more frilly dress and apron - now she wears cool jeans.
It's a little (OK - A LOT) sweet and sappy and some of the songs are a little annoying when you've heard them over and over again. My daughter has decided that this is the video she wants to keep to watch in the van. She hasn't learned to use the headphones yet, so I get to hear it about 5 or 6 times a week, too. Sometimes I find myself sitting at work singing "She's sweet, she's fun, she'll be the one. Straw b b b b b berry Strawberry Shortcake!" or "Friendship grows like a flower" (My co workers think I'm off my rocker!)
Overall I think it's a cute movie for little girls - I don't think little boys would be interested for very long.
Recommended Ages: 2-7 (probably more like 2-5 or for adults who want to take a trip down memory lane)
