This is one of my fav movies!

This description will reveal alot about the plot, please proceed with caution if you haven't seen it.

I was skeptical of watching this movie when my family first rented because 1. I'm not a big Kurt Russell fan and 2. I am definitely not a Sci Fi movie fan. The extent of my interest in Sci Fi was the old Star Trek series, if that tells you anything.

This movie is more than just science fiction. It starts out in Egypt in the 20's (?) and you see a young girl getting a necklace from a vendor. There is a huge artifact being uncovered that is a large stone looking circle with runes on it.

Now it’s the present. Dr Daniel Jackson is a poor, overeducated, definitely geeky multi linguistic archaeologist who is trying to prove a new theory on the pyramids. It’s not working. He is approached by an older lady we soon realize is the young girl from the earlier segment. She knows alot about him and needs his help deciphering some runes on an artifact. He agrees and off to the military base they go.

He solves the decoding and eventually they show him that what he's been working on is the big stone circle. When they get his translations, and realize it’s a gate or tunnel through a wormhole to another planet, they decide to go. Daniel is positive he can get them home and so Jack O'Neil and his team take Dr Jackson and go through. They end up in a huge pyramid in an Egypt looking place. As they are trekking through the desert they discover a village of people who speak ancient Egyptian. Of course Dr Jackson figures out their language and is "married" to the chief's daughter, Sha're, and Jack befriends her brother, Scar'a.

Then enters the evil Ra, the sun God who was banished on earth when the star gate was buried. He enslaves the people of Abados, (the planet they are on) and has done so for centuries. Dr Jackson and Jack are captured more of his crew are killed, and its up to the kids from the village, led by Scar'a, to save them. Of course they do, the bad guys are killed and Jackson decides to stay on Abados with his 'wife' while Jack goes back.

About this movie, this is at times sad and at times hilarious. I think it varies from most Sci Fi movies in that if you're not a sci-fi fan, you aren't going to be lost in what little techno babble there is. All the 'high tech' stuff that is in this movie is definitely easy to follow and understand. One thing I hate is when movies get so technical you can't understand them. The premise is interesting, we were slaves who revolted and gained freedom and cut ourselves off from our master the Evil Ra who lives in a pyramid and is a space alien.

If you like comedies, this one is for you.
