The Most Lethal Battle in World History

Date of Review:  Apr 23, 2004
The Bottom Line: Recommended as a realistic depiction of the horrors of war and the strength of the antiwar message
Review: The five month Battle of Stalingrad beginning August 21st, 1942 was one of the most monumentally important and devastating conflicts in military history. More than any other event, it marked the turning point in World War II. Up until this battle,...

The Reality of War

Date of Review:  Jul 24, 2000
The Bottom Line: A truly great film.
Review: Move over Private Ryan. This 1993 German made war film beat you to the punch of portraying the gruesome truth about war and it's effects on those who must take part in it. In the tradition of Das Boot we get to see the Second World War from the...

The 199 day battle that took the lives of 2 million

Date of Review:  Mar 27, 2006
The Bottom Line: If you want to see a movie in the genre of Das Boot and Saving Private Ryan make sure to check out Stalingrad
Review: Stalingrad (now Volgograd) lies on the Volga River in southern Russia. It was a major transit point for oil and supplies for the Russian army in World War II, and here the Russian and German armies fought the deadliest battle in WWII, if not in...

STALINGRAD: A few words on the best action film about WW II

Date of Review:  Feb 17, 2000
The Bottom Line: Unlike SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, which sentimentalized World War II after its first 20 minutes, STALINGRAD never relents in its plain depiction of the madness.
Review: It seems obscene to make comparisons about war films. For one thing, as you might see in *WHO'LL STOP THE RAIN (1978), the best war films may have the blowing up of things and people only as an incident or a context, perhaps not at all.

[I...

The German's Saving Private Ryan...

Date of Review:  Mar 4, 2003
The Bottom Line: We hear of Dunkirk & the Bulge, but many more died at Stalingrad. The story about those men who gave in a way many cannot ever conceive.
Review: I finally got around to watching this movie the other day and was very moved by it. I tend to prefer movies that focus on the big picture and strategy of wars. I have been a student of military tactics and strategy and as such a student the various...

OK, so war sucks...got anything else for me?

Date of Review:  Sep 2, 2001
The Bottom Line: See this film purely for the chance to get a German perspective on the Eastern Front. A good war movie, but no classic.
Review: Although I rate this as a 'not recommended', that's only because it's an either-or choice. In fact this is the kind of movie I'd say to a friend -- 'well, see it if you've got a chance and nothing better to do, but don't go out of your way'. This...

A GEM FROM GERMANY!

Date of Review:  Jan 8, 2000
Review: If you are a lover of war movies like myself, you are probably disappointed more than not about the often lack of reality. Additionally, as a student of history, a constant stream of one sided good-guy / bad-guy productions, are rather boring after...

The Frozen Hell of Stalingrad

Date of Review:  Apr 24, 2000
Review: If you are a World War Two film buff this is a must have. Even someone who is not a fan of war movie genre will be impressed by the harsh brutality of this film that depicts the battle of Stalingrad. Relying heavily on the historical record (I...

A return to the Volga

Date of Review:  Apr 23, 2001
The Bottom Line: A good treatment from the German perspective about the most disastrous defeat they ever sustained. A good counter-point to the recent release of "Enemy At The Gates".
Review: Among the other problems modern day Germans have faced in squarely confronting their recent history has been the debacle at Stalingrad. Apart from the fact that nearly half a million of their soldiers marched to the Volga and only 5000 ever came...

The Horrors of War

Date of Review:  May 25, 2000
Review: The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the most brutal battles in human history, and the film STALINGRAD is the most brutally disturbing war movie I have ever seen. The film begins in Italy in the summer of 1942, where a veteran Wehrmacht unit is on...
