I bought a laptop months ago and went with the default drive. For the money it would cost to upgrade the laptop with Compaq, I could purchase a drive myself, install it, and put my old drive in an external enclosure. Well, I've done just that and my upgrade was this Seagate drive (ST980815A) and couldn't be happier.

Note that the drive has the 5400.3 moniker. The ".3" denotes it's a perpendicular drive. The other perpendicular drive from Seagate is 160GB. Most 2.5" drives have 2 platters, but this ST980815A has a single platter. This saves on cost but still has top-of-the-line performance due to high areal density. For your money you simply can't buy a better performing drive.

I ran an HD benchmark (SiSoftware Sandra) and got a score of 37MB/s. This is close to 7200rpm performance on a cheap 5400rpm drive - WOW! For reference my old drive (4200rpm 60GB) scored 19MB/s. I'm very pleased with this upgrade.
