Samsung A117 - Don't waste your time
Date of Review: Aug 4, 2008
The Bottom Line: Avoid this phone! You really do get what you pay for, and in this case you get even less.
I purchased this phone as a replacement for my Moto Razr which was involved in an unfortunate drunken accident. Though this is actually an AT&T GoPhone, which is a no contract prepaid type of deal, I just swapped in my old SIM card and it works as a normal phone. After being used to using the easy-to-use and straight forward Razr this Samsung is a miserable failure of a phone.
Everything seemed OK as soon as I took it out of the box, it's small and very light. I let it fully charge before turning it on and that's where it all went downhill. I was immediately underwhelmed by the grainy hard to read screen and extremely counter-intuitive button and menu setup. For instance, the center button which should logically be used to open the menu screen, opens up the web browser which then needs to be canceled and takes a few seconds to shut down. Things only got worse as I tried to make and receive calls. The speaker quality is downright awful and everything sounds garbled and muddy. I also have an extremely hard time even getting any reception in the exact same spots where I would get upwards of three bars with my Motorola.
Even for the seemingly reasonable price of $39.99, this phone isn't worth the cheap plastic box it came in. I will not be buying another Samsung phone in this lifetime.
