Buy certified pre-owned...GREAT car!!! I LOVE it!
Pros:
Gas mileage (I average about 24.9 miles--inner city, and about 28.7 on the highway)
Cons:
There is some torque steer.
Would like more center console space.
The Bottom Line:
A great car, but if you don't want to spend over 45K for a new model, consider certified pre-owned (low miles, original and extended warranty for a great price!)

Author's Review
Coming from a family where my parents owned Triumphs, VW Karmen ghias, volvos, peugeots, and saabs (cars that are kinda out of the ordinary)...I felt right at home purchasing my 02 Saab 9-3 convertible. I always thought of myself as Benz person, but after graduating from law school and just starting out, that was not economically comfortable for me. I drove a Lexus IS 300, Honda S2000, Nissan 350Z, a 3 series BMW, and a Saab. The one that was most fun to drive was the BMW 325iC-- and also the most expensive!
A close second was the Saab 9-3. I liked the little oddities about the Saab, which made me remember my Mom's 87 900 S Turbo. (sigh) That was a great car, and hardly ever needed servicing. So, I decided to purchase the Saab because in my own past experience Saab's are reliable, safe, and a little out of the ordinary. Again, this is a great car to buy with low miles and certified pre-owned. When I purchased my car, I had 28K miles on it, and over 1 year left on the ORIGINAL manufacturers warranty, plus the certified warranty.
My 9-3 is a great-looking car and also a solid ride. It has a lotta punch!
PROS
Price (under $18K!!!!!) The insurance is very reasonable (under $600 every six months) I just love my seat warmers, soft leather seats, memory seats, wood grain, and a surprisingly spacious back seat. The whole interior is pretty generous. My husband is 6'5 and he is comfortable driving or sitting in the passenger's seat. The top goes up and down in about 30 seconds, and the turbo power is great. It accelerates like nobody's business!
The car looks very sleek with the top down, and the wind noise is not loud when the top is up. Trunk space is good.
CONS
Cup holders are a joke--just don't get a big drink or big bottled water.
