Product Review

Great heater, but temperature gauge is not in degrees

by   dsong02 ,   Oct 26, 2005

Pros:  Heater heats up fast, silent, automatically shuts off based on settings

Cons:  Warm/Hot to touch when used, large and bulky (but light), bad temperature gauge.

The Bottom Line:  Highly recommended when heating smaller rooms, and if you don't mind the style, it is a wonderful heater that does what it is supposed to do - heat!

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I received this heater a few days ago for my 8 month-old's room, as her room tends to be cooler than the other rooms of our townhouse.

First Impression:
It looked better in pictures, but I still liked the design. My wife almost made me return it because it looked "too retro", but she was willing to keep it if it worked well. Also, it was much bigger than I thought. it kinda stands out like an eye sore in my daughter's room (all pink with white furniture).

It also feels kinda flimsy because the entire heater is hollow with very thin heat coils at the bottom. I guess I'm not familiar with convection heaters, but it seemed very cheap to me. The sides are not stainless - it is painted with a gray-ish color to give it a metallic appearance. Personally, I would have liked it better if they left it all chrome. As for weight, it's incredibly light, so with a crawling baby, it can easily be knocked over. Good thing it has an automatic turn off if it gets tipped (though I haven't tested that yet).

Function:
As a heater, this thing rocks! The simplicity of the heater is awesome for me, but I can understand if some people might think it's just too simple. It has only two settings - Min and Max (750 and 1500W respectively). There is also a temperature output gauge which is a rotating dial to increase the temperature. The one big issue I have with this is that it doesn't actually measure the temperature. The gauge is in it's own increments of 1 - 6, 6 being the warmest. So, I have no idea what the temperature is in the room. However, this is a non-issue for me since our baby monitor can measure the temperature in the room. If this is an issue for you, you might want to look at something with an actual digital or analog temperature readout/setting feature.

My daughter's room is about 11x13 - a very small room, but decent sized bedroom. Our main central heat is set at around 71F. The heater is set at Min and the gauge is set around 3. With this setting, when I wake up in the mornings, her room is 79F! Nice and toasty for her room...makes me almost want to spend the night in there instead of our chilly room. We used to put three blankets on her in the crib, but now, her pj's and a thin receiving blanket is sufficient for her evenings.

The other good thing about this is that once it reaches the temperature that the gauge represents (and I have no idea how that translates from the 1-6 to a temperature, but we just had to learn by trial and error), it shuts the heat coil off. Because it doesn't continuously heat the room, the temperature is kept at a constant. It turns itself back on when it gets below the temperature setting that the gauge translates to (again, no clue how that translates).

Another plus about this is that it is virtually SILENT. Very quiet operation makes it easy for our daughter to sleep. If you sit in the room with no other noises and listen, you can hear a very very faint hum, but even that is hard to hear. For all intents and purposes, it is SILENT.

Issues:
- My main issue with this heater is that when it heats up, the sides get warm. It doesn't get hot enough to burn someone, but does get warm, so little children will need to be careful.
- The heater is light, so it can tip over pretty easily. It would be best to keep it against near a wall away from crawling infants or toddlers.
- Temperature Gauge: I would have liked it better with actual temperature readings on it, but what it currently has works for us, so not a huge deal. It could prove problematic though for a lot of people.
