Product Review

Reservation American dream

by   Niloniak ,   May 19, 2000

Pros:  Perfect for a long weekend

Cons:  some references are fairly obscure

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

Alexie's first full-length novel revisits many of the themes he has touched on in his earlier writing but, with a back beat. At the center of this novel is music -- the Indian rock band that Alexie follows from its inception to end and Robert Johnson, and his guitar. The band members we know and have learned to love and tolerate in equal doses from Lone Ranger, Robert Johnson is a near mythical creation capable of salvation and miracle.

Reservation Blues is a wholly American novel. It is immersed in Americanisms from the start to the end. The belief that anything can happen if you want it; you can recreate your life at will; belief in entitlement, omens and the value of a good exit. I cannot imagine this novel being written outside of this country.

Alexie takes you along on a roller coaster ride of emotions -- don't be surprised if you laugh out loud, turn the page and fight back the tears. I was so effected by the culmination of this novel, I could not read another word for days.

This man's talent is awe-inspiring.
