PaperMate Altitude....A Heavenly Pen
Date of Review: Nov 3, 2007
The Bottom Line: Super writing experience. It's unlikely you'll find another pen that writes as smoothly in this price range. You won't hear cursive language from those using this pen.
Papermate's blue and grey "Altitude"ballpoint pen , a writing instrument with attitude , could almost be called a Civil War pen, and not just because of its Rebel/Yankee color scheme. This wondrous pen is so desirable that brothers, sisters, spouses, friends, and colleagues may find themselves in battle for possession of this slick writing gem. What makes this inexpensive pen so special that it can tempt the purest of heart to lust for another's pen or "forget"to return it once borrowed? One touch, one scribbled letter, one casual line is all it takes to send a thrill from one's finger tips shooting up the arms to the user's brain and pleasure center. Euphoria with a click and a stroke!

Sampling the Pen
The Paper?*Mate Altitude pens are packaged in a clear plastic shell against a cardboard backing so they are clearly visible to the consumer. What caught my attention was the price, a dollar for a pack of four. At least one online vendor was selling them for $1.19 apiece and 14 dollars a dozen on the day this review was written. Ollie's Bargain Store was giving them away for a dollar per four pack. Knowing a bargain when I see one, I bought two four packs for a total of about eight pens total.
Separating the plastic case from the paper backing posed no difficulty. I gripped the new pen in my fingers and drew a few lines, then a few more, before graduating to circles, squares, letters, and even complete words. I felt the pen gliding across the paper as smoothly and effortlessly as Kimmy Meisner skating on the slick ice. Very little pressure needs to be applied as the pen travels over the paper making beautiful writing. The letters are crisp with no smearing or puddles of ink one might experience with some other inexpensive pens. The point is always clean, no excess ink to be found there either.
When one finds an unexpected delight such as the PaperMate Altitude one wants to share his serendipitous find with others. Mrs. Spudman was the first to share the Altitude and was immediately smitten by its charms. She kept the sampler, and the new pack I bought for her the next day. Because of my affinity for losing pens, the proliferation of pen pilfering coworkers and students at the center, and Ollie's bargain prices I decided to stock up on these wonderful pens. This stash should last me for quite a while.
I also prefer the retractable pen to those with lids that are easily lost. One problem I do have is that I can't stop from playing with the pocket clip, so much so that I invariable end up breaking it off the pen. At least that idiosyncrasy makes identifying my pens easier.

"If your pen does not perform properly, please return for replacement."
A return by this spudwriter is unlikely. The PaperMate Altitude has provided me with one of the most enjoyable writing experiences that I can remember. Even costlier pens haven't delivered such satisfaction. The Altitude earns five out of five potatoes in the Spudman rating system. Give one a try. These pens 'll gain ya as a user if you do.
Yes, these terrific pens are MADE IN CHINA.
