Author's Review
I purchased a DMR-ES35V after much research on DVD/VHS burners. The best review I read was on this sight by BG357.
I wanted to thank him for all the information he provided and let anyone else interested in this unit know about my experience with it.
#1 it was a pain to set up due to a misprint in the burner/cablebox/tv setup instructions- it says to put the cable from the wall into the burner first and then route it through the cable box this is backwards, always go through the cable box first! there is a 1-800# sticker on top of the unit, I called, got right through to a technician who explained about the misprint and was up and running in no time following her clear instructions. No charge and no outsourced foreign technician. Their phone tech service was excellent.
#2 VCR/DVD players work great- no problems watching tapes/dvds or previously burned dvd's.
there are some features missing from the remote that I have gotten used to on other dvd player remotes, direct to dvd title is one of them,I hate waiting through previews and other stuff thrown in before the feature film. bg357 also mentioned mute which I never use. Some missing features may be on submenus, but I would prefer them to be on a button.
3# Burning DVD's- so far I have burned 2 tapes to DVD R. both have worked flawlessly as a direct transfer under the FP setting (stretch to fit the size of the disc)One was an old movie, the other was our wedding tape. After the burn I noticed that bothe discs had copied everything to one chapter which I was able to title but not edit. I think If I used a DVD RW or DVD-RAM disc I would be able to edit it afterwards.
(my pc only uses R discs, so that is all I buy, this burner unit can also use -R,-RW)
#4 Steep learning curve, This unit is packed with features, it will take me weeks to learn all the ins and outs but it will work for you no matter what tech level you are. I mostly bought the unit to copy my wedding tape to DVD and I was able to figure out how to do a direct transfer through the menus in about 5 minutes. very easily done. It has the ability to make a better recording with custom chapter breaks and titles but that will take some reading and trial and error before I figure out the best way to do it.
There are also 2 buttons on the faceplate for onetouch recording, picture a circle bisected from top to bottom click on the halfcircle pointing towards the VCR and it will copy the DVD to VHS, click on the half circle pointing towards the DVD and it will copy from the VHS to the DVD.
I haven't tried this feature yet but it seems the simplest way to record something.
All in all I am very happy with my purchase. it is a solid well built box with a nice remote and so far has done everything I have needed it to.
