"One Hot Minute" was the first Chili Peppers album I got and I still think of it as the best one. Despite the bad reputation of this album, I consider it the best Chili Peppers album ever made. Why? I`m trying to explain it to you:
As far as I know, the Chili Peppers tried to find their own new identity, when they were recording this album. It`s so chaotic and to me it seems, that it`s not the musicians, who control the music, but the music, that controls the members of the band. Dave Navarro never suited this band very well, but I wish, Frusciante had used some good old wah-wah instead of his electric gimmicks on Californication. Navarro really tries to sound like the Chili Peppers, he acts as tough and row as it gets and tries hard to be a virtuous, genious guitar player. Its clear, that he isn`t. Instead of geniously, he plays chaotically, but thats exactly what I like about the guitar part on "One Hot Minute". To me it seems as if they were all playing on the limit, because crossover was kind of defined by the Chili Peppers and so they try to re-define theirselfs, although they don`t know how. So they checked out new tunes and styles and because the Peppers were and still are a great band, it sounds great, although its not "Peppers". My absolute favorite on this album (it`s worth buying it just because of this track) is nr. 8, "Walkabout". It`s just so simple and so easy, but it`s not "Peppers". Kiedis has never sounded so cool, flea plays a simple, but genious bass lick and navarro just gives the chords. sure, they kind of try to imitate something like old-school funk-rap, but mixed with the unique Chili Peppers sound it`s just great. Another good example is track 13, it`s called "Transcending" and it sounds psychedelic and strange. It`s an experiment, they tried to check out something new, but because they`re still the Chili Peppers, it creates a strange atmosphere, which no other band would have been able to create.
I think you should buy or at least listen to this album, because it`s something unique, something that you won`t here never again and something that can`t be imitated. It represents a developing, searching band that hasn`t found it`s own style yet, it`s, generally spoken, an experiment. As we can hear and read, the Chili Peppers have found their new identity with the album "Californication" and have followed on this path with their latest release "By The Way". But on "One Hot Minute" you get real life instead of harmonic ideals, you can feel the tension between the old members and the new guitar player and between the members themselfs and that`s what it makes exciting and worth buying it.
