Nice Shave, Lousy Product
Date of Review: Jan 9, 2008
The Bottom Line: Pay more and buy a better product. This will break easily.
A few months ago I bought a Philips 7240XL rechargeable cordless/cord shaver and have been using it fairly regularly. I have owned other Norelco shavers before and have been pleased although not as much as with the Remington Triple headed ones (but this was reasonably priced).
The shave is pretty good. Close and the razor is very quiet. The only problem and it is a severe one occurred today when I opened the razor, removed a head to clean it and watched as the insides fell into about 10 separate parts.
This razor was intentionally engineered to be flimsy; to fall apart quickly so that it has to be replaced.
Pieces that in previous Norelco models were solid plastic or metal are now very thin or worse, multiple pieces to perform the same function. A millimeter of thin metal replaces 3 of solid plastic. Does Philips think this isn't going to break after 20, 50 or 100 cleanings?
I think the company is being cute. Speeding up the obsolescence factor to increase profits. I am not an engineer but I pretty much defy anyone to look at the removable components of this one and then look at a model from a few years ago and explain how this is better.
Shame on this company and pay a bit more and buy a razor from a company who builds a more honest product.
