Product Review

Nintendo Entertainment system 8 bit, gone but not forgotten.

by   rpgaddict ,   Nov 12, 2003

Pros:  NES. actually came with two games a zapper and two controllers for 120 dollars.

Cons:  Forty-five dollars for a game in the eighties.

The Bottom Line:  For the timeframe Nintendo was great. None could seem to do better in sales.THe eight bit titles and system can still be bought and are cheap.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

Some of the readers may scoff at the Nintendo eight bit system. The Nintendo 8 bit system however was a big step for its' time. Just think of one of it's forerunners the Atari. Many of the Atari games were made up of oversized squares and dots. Not many Atari games true endings either.
I remeber a game for the Atari I beat called Berzerk. The object of Berzerk was kill or be killed by robots.Your character was comprised of, a line for the body. A large dot for the head. Lines made his arms legs, and feet. Think of him as the little stick man with a laser gun.

The laser I don't believe could be seen.Shooting could be done in eight directions. With our little friend you ran through rooms blasting robots. The robots all looked the same in appearance. Yep the same size and shape. The walls line as well. The exit it was just a hole. As the game progressed. The robots began to shoot more rapidly.
By holding down on a little metal bar different levels could be selected. This bar was located on the Atari console.

In certain levels there was an additional character. I believe his name was Otto. This character was a circle with a smiley face. He'd bounce up and down like a basketball. If he hit the player, the player would glow and a unusual sound came forth. I believe this was supposed to indicate electrocution. I am almost a hundred percent positive. On some of the game's levels Otto could not die.
This game wasn't bad, but there wasn't much to be done.
The end of the game, what happened? It just stopped. The screen changed a different color and everthing became still. No spaceship to rescue our strong little survivor.

Many Atari games made in this fashion.A lot of games also seemed to be for scoring purposes only. There was no dialog either. In baseball for the Atari not only did the players have no jersey but they were all one solid color. The computer may be blue and your team white. The stages on games changed very little. Three stages might be played over and over again, changing only difficulty.Though it may seem like I am putting forth an all out insult of the Atari. This is not the case. What I am trying to do is show what great changes the NES. brought about.

In the late eighties like 86,87 Nintendo released it's first eight bit console in the United States. Now characters, and enviroments actually looked somewhat real. There's a tree and a rock and a lake and you know for certain.Baseball players not only wear noticable uniforms, but they're real professional players. Dialog is used in games. The controllers boast four buttons. Buttons a,b select annd start. Atari controllers had just one button.Turbo buttons, dust covers, and arcade like controllers enter the scene.

Movies like Top Gun are made into video games. Beat em ups like Double Dragon 1,2, and three come about. My favorite was Double Dragon II. Though the attacks were very different. Press to the right, and tap the kick button.A kick to the left side is done.Unique bossese like the blue pig like Ganon. Bee Bop and Rocksteady in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II.THe man from Double Dragon II,who wore orange clothing and a metal mask. The man who would lift you up by the throat and punched Billy/Jimmy Lee in the stomach repeatedly.Cartoon character's like the Chip and Dales Rescue Rangers, become stars on the electronic gaming market. So do the DuckTales reach stardom.

Board games like Othello become video games. Ring King not only can a wide assortment of punches be used, so can the whole ring. The save feature is introduced.Zapper gun is now known, for games like DuckHunt and Gangster Alley.
Another new feature many may not remember Rob the robot.
Rob balanced a disk in between his hands, and could be challenged in games.Rob's NINtendo career was not long. May be a year and the robot was retired.

Yes the Nintendo Entertainment System was definitely an innovative era in electronical entertainment.
