Author's Review
Okay, so I dont have a Game Boy Advance yet. But I dont think Im ready for one at this point, I still really like my Game Boy Color. I have recently looked in to the Game Boy Advance and tried many games, but I decided to keep my GBC and I wasnt ready to spend the money on the GBA and the games for it, especially when you can find the GBC games for $10.00.
Ergonomics:
Being an adult, I find the Game Boy Advance hard to hold. With the larger screen, there is less surface area for the controls and it has an awkward shape with hands on either side of the screen. The Game Boy Color is easier to hold with the bottom half being the controller to use.
Screen:
The GBA has a bigger screen that the GBC, but its not easier to see. The GBA screen is dark, which many people complain about. While playing the GBA, I found myself shifting to different angles trying to see what was going on, you HAVE to use a light with it. The GBC screen is much brighter, easier to play in different lighting situations. Though I have a worm light for mine and find myself using it a lot because it makes it easier and it fits easily in the case with the GBC.
Games:
There are plenty of good games for the GBC and they are about half the price of the GBA games and will work on the GBA. My favorites (so far) are Mortal Kombat 4, Street Fighter Alpha, Zelda, Aladdin, Tetris (of course), Alone in the Dark, Super Mario Deluxe (brings back memories of the NES) and Wario Land 3.
Sound:
The sound quality is good, a big step from the Game Boy. Still have to use earphones to hear well and not disturb the person next to you. GBC games have move detailed sound effects than Game Boy games.
Other Advantages:
The GBC uses less batteries than the GBA. This is a big advantage for long trips. You can find the GBC used cheap at Electronics Boutique, eBay, other auction sites and probably garage sales.
Cons:
Its still expensive new. Games will become harder to find.
Overall:
If your looking for a portable gaming device for traveling, a used one may be perfect. If you still have one, you may want to wait until you upgrade to a GBA, it has some maturing to do. I look forward to playing my GBC.
