Author's Review
I can remember when I got my first hand held system, the Sega Gamegear, which was in color from the very start. I played it a lot, and still play it to this day from time to time. But it drained batteries like nobodys business.
A friend of mine told me to get a gameboy because it had a longer battery life, but it wasn't in color.
Well that was then and this is now, and things have changed!
In the past 5 years the videogame market has been flooded with hand helds, game.com(a black and white system with a touch screen and cheap, shoddy games), Nomad(a hand held Sega Genesis with a battery life of like 20 minutes), SNK Pocket color(a system that was pretty much just released and is already dead in the U.S.), the yet to be released Wonder Swan, and of course Gameboy Color.
With the exception of Gameboy Color, they all stink.
To put it simply (because I personally hate super lengthy reviews), I love this system. I own like 12 consoles including a Dreamcast, and I don't play any of them as near as much as I do my Gameboy Color. I was VERY lucky, as I got the special Pokemon package with a special edition yellow cased Gameboy Color with Pokemon graphics on the boarder, and a copy of Pokemon Yellow inside.
There are many things I love about this system. Here is a rundown.
Weight: This thing is fairly light, which makes it very portable, it also keeps it from killing your hands when you have been playing Pokemon Pinball for over 2 hours on end.
Selection of games: The selection of games on this thing is incredible. Not only will it play new games with the Gameboy Color label on it but it will also use games and accessories for the old black and white gameboy. Plus more games continue to get released. Nintendo is lucky enough to own several game franchises such as Mario, Zelda, and of course, POKEMON, all of which can be found on the system. They are even re-making some of the old NES games, to fit on the Gameboy Color, and I must say they are doing a great job!
Battery Life: It just keeps going, the battery life is great, I buy cheapo batteries at Dollar General and it lasts around a month before I have to get another set of batteries put in it.
Friend friendly: Yes, there are multiplayer games all you need is a link cable, another Gameboy or Gameboy color, and 2 copies of the game (as long as it is a 2 player game) and you can now play with your friends.
Simplicity of games: Most of the game on it are simple do to the limited amount of buttons on the system. When I say simple I don't mean easy there are plenty of games that are challenging available on this system to buy. This also makes some of the games very addictive and hard to put down. Pokemon Pinball comes to mind, and I don't care what you parents think of Pokemon, if you trash this games just because of the Pokemon theme in it without even playing it then well, you shouldn't be writing here on epinions!
However, it can handle some games, that despite the systems simplicity, that aren't all that simple, decent ports of games like Dragon Warrior, Perfect Dark, and Metal Gear Solid are on the system, and they do have some fairly in depth game play!
Although there are a lot of good games out there for it, there are also a lot of horrid games out there, but isn't that true for all systems? If you stick with 1st party games then I can ALMOST guarantee that every game you buy will be a winner. By the way 1st party games are ones made directly by Nintendo.
The fact that it is color really helps, just like with movies, for most people having color alone makes games a lot more enjoyable. The resolution is also better than that of the original Gameboy. The Gameboy Color seems to have slightly better resolution than the Gamegear, but maybe it just seems this way, as a lot of games made for Gameboy Color pretty much use it's full color palette! The image also looks a lot clearer, and cleaner than the ones displayed on the original Gameboy. Glare also has been reduced from that on the original Gameboy The one thing I hate about it is that they added color, but it STILL ISN'T BACKLIT, but that can be fixed (see below) fairly easily!
Get this: the Gameboy Color isn't just for games anymore, there planning (haven't heard much about this one lately though) an mp3 player add on for it, and Interact has just released a device that lets you access e-mail from almost any telephone outlet, you can also get a thing called a Wurm Light (I think thats what it is called) that shines a light on it, but it drains the batteries more if you use it..
To put it simply, if you love videogames, then you must buy this system, you won't be disappointed, and trust me, it can and does hold it's own against the more advanced systems.
