Pros:  Great range, Reversible hood.

Cons:  Not backward compatible to manual focus Nikons.

The Bottom Line:  Quality at a great price.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought this lens as part of a kit with a 28-80mm and The F80( N80 ). This gave me a full 28-300mm range in two lenses.
The separate price would have been £150 (US$212) I got it for about £100.
The build quality is excellent in comparison to the 28-80mm, which feels plasticy and fragile in comparison. Optically it has given me great results through out the range, and is not much bigger than my Sigma 70-210mm. For use on a new Nikon it is perfect but it is not backward compatible to manual focus Nikons. The G lens range have no manual aperture rings which is probably why they can make them for this price.
On the negative side I have found that at the 300mm end the autofocus is prone to hunt. This is noisy enough to scare of wild life so if you intend to shoot birds I would advise switching to manual focus.
The maximum aperture of f5.6 can also be a limiting factor on cloudy days. If you shoot on 100asa film you will be hard pressed to handhold this lens at 300mm. I like to shoot at a 500th of a second when handholding but this requires changing to 200asa film or higher in anything but sunshine or light cloud. ( You can work this out using the old sunny f16 rule, 100 asa film gives 125 sec at f16 in direct sunlight or 1000 sec at f5.6, losing two stops in cloudy weather drops your shutter speed to 250th or worse. i.e. camera shake speeds at 300mm)
This said this lens is great value for money, be aware of its limitations and it will not disappoint.
A great lump of glass for around $212.
