Pros: Inexpensive, small, easy to use.Works with all Nikons with CLS. Great for D40(x).
Cons: No Swivel left to right. That's it.
The Bottom Line: If you travel and have any Nikon DSLR, and want simple, inexpensive, small flash unit. The SB-400 a great choice.

Review: Sometimes you want a particular lighting situation that your pop up flash on you D40(x) especially is not going to give you.
Impossible to do bounce or other great diffuse light and shadow controlled shots. You need a "Speedlite"or Flash... |

Pros: Small, fun and great quality
Cons: Not the best deal compared to the SB600.
The Bottom Line: Get an SB600 first if you can. You'll have more room to grow. This is a great 2nd or 3rd flash.

Review:
What is it? The Nikon SB400 flash is a small and very simple to use flash, most at home aboard the more recent DSLR cameras from Nikon and won't work on any film cameras except for the new F6. Basically everything from the D70... |

Pros: Small size, bounce/rotating head, lower price (than SB-600), i-TTL capability, and... SMALL SIZE.
Cons: No swivel, could use more power
The Bottom Line: A tiny, portable, decent flash with some nice features, but no substitute for a full-sized flash when picture quality really counts.

Review: This review is from an amateur photographer perspective (i.e. "me"), and won't go into technical specifications or technical use cases. For reference, I know a little about photography (maybe you could say "hacker/hobbyist") and have used SLR...

Pros: Size. Cycle speed. Simplicity. Bounce tilt.
Cons: A little pricey. No horizontal tilt. Difficult to find low cost diffusers.
The Bottom Line: Great little piece of hardware, good addition to anyone's kit.

Review: I am not at all disappointed with my SB400, it is small, light, and feels like it is solidly constructed. It locks onto the hot shoe securely with only a little play. The cycle time is quiet and fairly fast, and I am satisfied with the AA battery...
