It's a Super DSLR

Yes I agree...Nikon's new D60 makes a great "First Time DSLR"

I've owned SLR's in the past (in a previous life when people shot stuff called Film)
but after ten years of (a clunky Kodak DC40 and) two Canon Powershots
this is my first digital single lens reflex, and I'm in love!

I didn't really set out to buy a DSLR, but after ordering a Coolpix P50 sight unseen
and discovering is was too small for my liking, I was ripe for 'something nicer'.
Took one look at the D60's smaller(more-practical) body size, in a camera shop in London
and made up my mind that I could probably make myself afford this my first SLR since 1994, when I sold my last Nikon F.

Going through Gatwick's North Terminal, I bought the D60 with the 18-55 kit lens from Dixons 'Tax Free'(I have my doubts about that last bit)
on my way to a Mediterranean cruise.
Cost me GBPounds 378.92
For that price, I wasn't impressed that the D60 came without an SD card supplied, or a lens hood for the zoom lens, but this is 2008
I bought a Kenko 52mm.dia. filter at the same time, to protect the coatings on the front element...GBPounds 17.00

Soon after I was on board the ship I charged its battery and was enjoying this new toy.
Geez, it felt good to have a big camera in my hand again
and the pictures it captures at low light levels was beyond anything I'd previously experienced!

I'm still learning what all the buttons are about(reading the Manual)
and the June 2008 edition of Popular Photography is revealing more secrets this technologically-amazing camera has waiting for me to discover.

The viewfinder is an absolute joy to look through, and encourages the user to shoot more pictures.
Playback on the 2.5 inch screen is adequate, and quite bright!

The 18-55 kit lens is very sharp
although the zoom ring doesn't feel as silky smooth as I remember older Nikkor lenses being
but then it's an economy lens with lots of plastic parts(I have NO problem with that)
and what counts with this cake is the eating(picture quality) -and that is superb!

The Nikon D60 is a great camera.
I've had it nearly a month now and I'm looking forward to using it over the next few years.
I'm now so keen, I've also bought a Sigma 10-20 super-wide lens to go with the D60, but that's another review!
Incidentally, with the Sigma lens mounted on the D60
it's an awesome combination, and looking through that lens in the D60 viewfinder is the stuff of dreams
but you'll have to buy the combo to find out for yourself.

Now I've had it for three months, it's as nice as ever
By now I've learned most of the buttons and controls
even though I still shoot on Auto!

By now I've sold the 18-55 kit lens that came with the camera
and bought Nikon's new 18-105 Zoom Nikkor
to replace it as 'Standard Lens' and that very nice too.
