With so many different styles of athletic shoes on the market it's easy to forget about some of the basic styles that have been around for a while. The Nike Cortez Basic Leather Shoe for men is a decent athletic shoe that has held it own since originally hitting the market during the early 1970's. Originally known as the "Tiger Corsair" the "Nike Cortez" continues to keep its footing in the industry. Fortunately, the shoe was renamed and reworked. Falling in line with one of the more basic all white athletic shoes sporting the big Nike swoosh and traditional insignia. One of the first things I noticed when wearing this particular shoe is the slender fit and narrow form fitting feel. Mastering the basic 14 hole lacing system is simple with soft laces that easily secure when tied. The lacing system pulls the shoe firmly around the midfoot and heel.
The shoes wear well both on concrete and gym floors however optimal performance is found on grass or dirt. Depending upon your activity it is here where the shoes durability is put to the test since the dirt and grass quickly leave their mark. It has been my experience that the all leather shoe cleans up well, but with frequent cleanings the shoes appearances begins to diminish and the gloss or perhaps luster eventually begins to fade. I have also had trouble cleaning the white/Zen rubber between the sole and shoe bottom. For some this is clearly a non-issue, but for those who plan on wearing them with their favorite blue jeans later during the evening this is where the scuff marks can become a real distraction.
The best thing about the shoes is the traction and secure heel fit when walking or jogging. Credit is given to the shoes grooved outsole. Hitting the ground running is not a problem since the shoes offer solid cushioning and protection. Fortunately, Nike has equipped the Cortez with the basic features that makes this shoe appealing for most basic physical activities. On the whole it's a respectable performer that delivers comfort and secure footing. Like most white shoes they won't last forever and wear and tear depends largely upon your activity. In my opinion it's not a running shoe in the true sense and wears more like a casual athletic shoe.
Overall, I'm giving the Nike Cortez an average 3 out of 5 stars. All in all I don't think there is anything special about the shoe and feel it's over priced by about 20 bucks. All things considered equal; if this shoe retailed for $38.00 dollars out of the box I might be inclined to peep out one more star. In the end it's a versatile shoe that works with most of my athletic attire. However in my opinion the target wearer are those with a normal arch looking for a firm midfoot fit. With that said, if you are looking for a versatile shoe that can handle a combination of pavement and you like variety when it comes to color, design and construction as the Cortez is also offered in Nylon, this shoe is for you.
