I was "introduced" to Mr. Bean a couple of years ago by a friend of mine and have been anxiously awaiting his arrival to DVD. For anyone not familiar with Mr. Bean, he's a British TV character created by actor Rowan Atkinson. He does all sorts of funny, nasty, silly and absolutely bizarre things that quite simply make you laugh out loud. In other words--don't watch these after having an appendectomy!
Mr. Bean just doesn't quite fit in with the rest of society. He tries his best, but nothing goes the way it should when he tries, and frequently he doesn't even try which usually results in some strange looks from other people. Even the insects pick on him when he goes to the park for a picnic and is incessantly hounded by a fly who wants to share his lunch. More often than not though, Mr. Bean prevails and while the result may not be exactly what he had in mind, he gets something out of the deal. Throw in his faithful Teddy and a few other characters and usually complete hysteria results!
Some of my personal favorite incidents--
A trip the dentist--he oversleeps, gets dressed and ready on the way to the office while driving. (quite funny)Once there he ends up accidentally injecting the dentist in the leg with the Novacane and has to become a do-it-yourself dentist.
Mind The Baby Mr. Bean--an innocent trip to the local amusement park has a minor wrinkle thrown in when he (accidentally) ends up with a baby in a carriage. Let's just say I'll never be able to look at a diaper in quite the same way ever again.
Merry Christmas Mr. Bean--a visit to Harrod's for Christmas shopping provides some serious laughs when he decides to play with the Nativity set Mr. Bean style! Stuffing the turkey gets a bit out of hand too--the whole episode is definitely a classic.
Do It Yourself Mr. Bean--it's the New Year and time to redo the apartment! The only problem is when you drive a small car, you have to figure out a unique way to get the recliner home that you bought. He also puts a new twist on room painting that I personally would like to try someday!
The only disappointment I had with the DVD set was someone felt it necessary to edit one particular scene out of Do It Yourself Mr. Bean. The only thing I can think of is that someone thought perhaps it was too violent for a young audience. If that was the case, Bugs Bunny should definitely banned. The Muppets abuse each other more than this.....
While I've selected a couple of my own favorite episodes, I have enjoyed them all. One other nice thing about the DVD set is some extra footage not previously available. Make some popcorn, sit back and be prepared to laugh!
