A set that missed quality control

I bought this on a whim at Staples and then tried for 2 weeks to get the set to work. Both handsets would not power on. I tried the included rechargeable batteries, my own rechargeable, and finally bought a set of regular batteries. Still no go. This set must have slipped past the quality control check.
