sounds like gravel in a blender
Date of Review: Feb 22, 2007
The Bottom Line: Good for very small loads if you're out of the house when it's running. Extremely loud pump. Slow drying. Moisture sensor useless. Lock irritating.
I replaced a stacked Maytag washer/dryer pair with the LG about three weeks ago. The LG is pretty, small, and gets clothes clean. However, it does not get clothes dry, even on the "more dry" setting. The moisture sensor seems to be miscalibrated, and the repairman said it could not be adjusted, so the automatic drying cycles are useless. Most loads need at least 2 1/2 hours of drying time. It is not possible to set the drying time for more than that, so you need to re-program the machine at least once for each load.
The child lock feature is irritating: the door remains locked for several minutes after you turn the unit off. That is true even if it has been hours since the cycle finished and the machine is completely cool. So, to empty the unit, you have to turn it off and cool your heels for a few minutes before it lets you in.
The real bummer is the noise level. The drain pump is extremely noisy--it sounds like gravel in a blender. And because of the way the dryer works (condenses the water vapor and pumps the condensed water out), the drain pump runs about once a minute for the entire 2 1/2 hour drying cycle. (The spin cycle is loud but not irritating; the drain pump is extremely irritating because it is so raspy.)
I contacted LG and had a repairman replace the pump under warranty a week after I bought the unit. (The phone number for LG was misprinted in the owner's manual, so it took some searching to get a valid number to contact them.) The new pump was quieter, but leaked. The repairman returned and repaired the leak, but that restored the noise level to its original, intolerable level. I'm really unhappy with the noise. I don't know whether I'll give the bloody thing away and find another solution, but the options for combo units are limited. On paper, the LG seems better than the competition, including Bosch. The reality is less clear.
