Author's Review
The Awesome iKICK, iK500 from KICKER reminds me of High School with a system in my Celica, except this system is in my living room, bathroom and garage!
If you want full range sound, loud volumes, thunderous bass in your Dorm, basement, garage, den or anywhere else, get the iK500 from KICKER!
Even at low volumes this this sounds sweet. I like classical music at work and it does not bother others, I put a violin soloist on the iPhone and the strings never sounded fuller or sweeter, I like the Treble setting at +1 with the Bass at +3 for most of my music.
I enjoy the remote control, because I can do everything I can with the scroll wheel on my iPod, I can go thru all of the iPod menus on both my iPhone and Video Nano, it is great! I can even adjust the Treble, Bass and toggle the AUX input on and off, so I can hook up my computer at work for a full range sound system.
The iK500 has a fully Digital Signal Processing chip built into the unit to optimize the frequency response of the 5.25" Woofers, 3/4" Tweeters and the KICK-Axx 6" Square Subwoofer on the back. This DSP chip does the "Equalization" in the Digital Domain (iPods, Zunes, MP3 players are all Digital when docked to a system like the iK500/ZK500, and Analogue when connected to the AUX input of these systems).
This DSP chip eliminates all of the phase-shifting anomalies that can mess with the stereo image--this is important with Jazz music as you can really see the vocalist, bass player, drummer, etc. in the soundstage of the iKICK from KICKER, it does a good job of making a Concert Quality Stereo Image, almost like being at a live performance, especially when you compare it to other iPod docking systems, the KICKER can play 5 times louder and actually has BASS!
I have found that the my iPhone, Touch, and Video Nano sound best docked to the KICKER iK500 with the SoundCheck and EQ on the iPhone/iPod/Touch in the OFF posistion!
I checked the iKICKs owners manual and they recommend these settings to be OFF as well, you should make sure you have your iPod/iPhone/Touch set correctly.
I also have the Bose SoundDock $299, Bose SoundDock Portable $399, Harmon Kardon Go + Play $349. The Bose units sound like kid's toys compared to the iKICK, and the Harmon Kardon has good bass at low volume levels, but the Bass never gets louder as you turn up the music--only the Treble and Mids get louder and this gives me a headache!
The Bose and Harmon Kardon units do not have displays, EQs or Bass and Trebble controls, this is also disappointing to me, because they cost more than the iK500 at $249.
