Funnier than Caddyshack!

Adam Sandler stars in this hilarious golf comedy, playing an outrageous rowdy hockey player turned golf pro.

The story begins with an overview of his childhood. His father loves hockey more than life itself, so his mother moves to Egypt where there are no hockey rinks for thousands of miles. Happy shares a common love of hockey with his dad and frequents many games. One day his dad is killed at one of the games by a stray hockey puck.

Happy is left with no parents, so he goes to live with his grandma. He is sad and scared at first, but his grandma cheers him up by wearing a Gene Simmons mask(the lead singer of the rock n roll group Kiss). Happy grows to love his grandma and continues his childhood, but develops a temper along the way.

He plays hockey on the Jr. Varsity team in High School, and holds a record for trying to stab someone with his ice skate. Happy can't skate or handle the puck well, but makes up for it with his intensity and powerful slap shot.

After High School Happy has jobs as a gas attendant, construction worker, security guard, and plumber, but ends up getting fired for messing around to much. He attends semi-pro hockey try outs every year, but never makes it due to his poor ability.

Happy has a bad day when his girlfriend dumps him, is cut from another hockey tryout, and finds out his grandma owes thousands of dollars to the IRS for never paying her taxes. He then has to figure out how to get money to pay the debt back. The IRS seizes his grandma's house and all her possessions too. They tell him he can buy the house back at a future auction, but he has to have the money to pay for it. She is forced to live in an elderly home, and the caretaker (played by Ben Stiller) forces the tenants to work for his personal gain when nobody is around. Happy hates that she is at the elderly home and vows to raise the money to get her house back.

Movers come to the house to take his grandmas stuff , and start goofing around with an old set of golf clubs. Happy stumbles upon the movers and makes fun of them for playing such a "sissy sport". They bet him money that he can't hit the golf ball. He takes the bet, and drives the golf ball a couple hundred yards. They pay him the money for the bet, and Happy comes to the realization that hitting golf balls can raise money for his grandmas house.

He goes to the local driving range to bet people that he can hit the ball further than them. A golf pro named Chubs (portrayed by Carl Wheathers) sees Happy's amazing ability to hit the long ball, and asks him to go to a tournament, where the winner is put on the pro golf tour. Happy is reluctant at first, but realizes it could be an opportunity to raise money for his grandma's debt.

He goes to the tournament, and meets a top ranked arrogant pro named Shooter McGavin (portrayed by Christopher McDonald). Happy also meets a beautiful public affairs coordinator named Virginia (portrayed by Julie Bowen).They recognize him as the guy with the long drive and part ways. After Happy walks away Shooter makes a smug comment about him. Virginia is not amused,and quickly changes the focus of their conversation to Happy's long drive ability.

Happy is not used to the customs and courtesies of golf, and acts like he is on a hockey rink. He uses profanity after missing a ball, and the bystanders are offended by it. Happy crushes the ball on the next swing and the crowd is so amazed that they quickly accept his vulgar behavior. He chokes his caddy, beats up a bystander, throws his clubs, but manages to win the tournament with his long drives. He is then invited to play on the pro tour. Chubs congratulates Happy on his win, but advises him to take a brake from playing until he can teach him the rest of the game. Happy goes against Chubs's advice and says he will keep playing.

Happy plays in the first tournament, but finishes dead last. He is still payed a couple thousand dollars, and doesn't care about his placing. Fans and commentators are intrigued at his ability to hit the long ball and are even more amazed by his outlandish antics. He goes on to play more tournaments and gains a fan base that wouldn't be interested in golf if Happy wasn't playing. Bikers, beer guzzling frat guys, and lightly clothed women are among some of his biggest fans.

He becomes the bad boy of golf, but the network gets fined for his behavior. Virginia is tasked with toning Happy's behavior down. She confronts Happy, and encourages him to be wild, but maintain some of the games rules and customs. Happy agrees to her proposal on the condition of her going out on a date with him. She agrees and Happy takes her out. He explains his grandmas predicament, and shows a gentler side to his personality. She is moved by his story and begins to like him.

Shooter McGavin starts to notice a decrease in his popularity and grows jealous of Happy. He goes to the network manager and tries to have him thrown off the tour. The manager refuses, because the ratings are at their highest ever. He says the only way Happy will be suspended or thrown out, is if he acts violent on air again. Shooter then hires a heckler to antagonize Happy into fighting. The heckler goes to a pro-celeb (pros paired with a celebrity) tournament to throw Happy off his game. Happy is paired with Bob Barker (Price is Right) and ends up playing terribly. The heckler gets under his skin so bad, that he ends up going after Bob. Bob proceeds to beat him up, and Happy is suspended for a week from the tour.

The suspension stops Happy from making money he needs to pay for the auction on his grandmas house. Virginia sets him up to do a Subway commercial, and it puts him at the amount he needs to buy the house back. Happy shows up at the auction and Shooter is there also bidding on the house. Shooter out bids him and is awarded the house. He offers the house back to Happy if he quits the tour. At first Happy accepts, but then challenges Shooter that if he can beat him at the next tournament, he gets the house back. Shooter accepts the challenge, and says if he wins, Happy is off the tour, and he keeps the house.

Happy goes to Chubs, and begs him to teach him how to play golf better. Chubs agrees to help Happy, but only after he says Chubs is better looking. Chubs teaches him the rest of golf, which gives Happy some new found confidence.

The next day Chubs dies in a freak accident. Happy plays with his friends death on his mind,and says he will dedicate the game to Chubs's honor.

Happy plays the game of his life and defeats Shooter for the title. Shooter loses his mind and tries to run off with the trophy jacket. Happy wins the house back for his grandma, and all is good.

The movies storyline has been explained, but the funny parts are for you to see. This is a laugh out loud comedy that will leave you smiling. It's a movie you watch when there's nothing good on the television, so I recommend buying it on DVD. I play golf, and find myself repeating lines from this movie on the greens all the time. I've watched it dozens of times, and will continue to do so the rest of my life. It will bring you up when you are down, and make you laugh when you are sad. So I hope you will enjoy it the same, and share it with others who haven't seen it before. Happy Gilmore will be watched by future generations to come, and forever crowned as the king of golf comedies. So sit back, relax, and laugh your head off. We all need to retreat to our little Happy place sometime!
