Garmin GPS 72 (It is a winner!)

I was looking to purchase a non-mapping GPS Receiver. After doing a few hours of web-research I kept coming back to the Garmin model 72 and 76. Both models had the features that I needed. The only differences between these two models are: The Model 76 adds a connector for an external antenna, The Model 76 has more pixels in the display (slightly sharper), and the model 76 package comes bundled with a PC Data cable. Both units offer the same performance, are the same physical size, have the same amount of memory, have the same display size, same type of antenna, offer tide prediction, and are water-resistant (submersible). With that information I went to my local dealer to try them out in the store.

I found that my dealer was really touting the model 76's features on the display card. The Model 76 was displayed right next to the model 72 and the many features listed for only the model 76 applied also to the model 72. The model 72 was described as being an entry-level GPS.

After powering both units on, I noticed that the display on the model 76 was sharper than the display on the model 72. I checked the revision of the software on the model 72 and noticed that it was 3 revisions out of date. From my prior web research I noticed that one of the software updates was to update the software for the display. The display on the model 72 was quite usable and clear.

After comparing the prices I noticed that I would be saving $56.00 by purchasing the model 72. So I did. After I took it home, I updated the internal software, which was a very easy and straight forward process. I noticed that display cleaned up and looked sharper. I believe that it might make it more comparable to the 76.

I then took it out in the back yard and sat down with the user manual. I found the manual to be clear and easy to follow. The GPS is easy to learn and easy to use.

I believe that this unit will exactly meet my needs for a reasonable price. For kayaking I purchased a small electronics dry bag that I will put the unit in to fasten to my kayak.
