Author's Review
That's my nick-name for our Expedition. "The Big Pig"
It's really a term of endearment. We like it. Although, I'm a little worried about the rising costs of fuel.
I call it "The Big Pig" for a few reasons: 1) It's really big, and 2) I feel like it might be a bit excessive and extravagant, hence the "pig".
I have always driven large vehicles. Originally from Texas, where everyone drives a pick-up truck, I am rather used to being the king of the road in a big truck. My wife and I traded in my Ford Lariat pick up for the Expedition. I liked the idea that it had the same basic frame and engine.
The Expedition handles better than the truck did because of the shorter wheel base, which makes it more fun to drive. The Expedition drives a lot like a big car. The steering is very easy and the interior is plush.
There is enough power to merge onto the highway with ease and passing is not a problem. I live near mountains and it handles very well on the steep, narrow, winding mountain roads too.
I had a few issues with the vehicle when we first got it. Finding a good dealer with a good service department helps when making warranty claims. I've owned Chevies, Mitsubishis, and Toyotas. They all have their share of problems and the Ford is no exception. I can't really give a bad rating because my issues were resolved quickly and fairly painlessly all things considered.
Gas mileage is not very good. I think I get about 13 mpg when driving around town and somewhere around 15 to 16 on the highway. We loaded up the Big Pig and drove from Houston, TX to Atlanta, GA with no problems. It was a comfortable ride and we only filled up a few times on the way. Not bad at all.
The size of the interior is the main attraction with a vehicle like this. With all the seats folded down there is a hair more than 4' across and about 7' of depth. Almost large enough to haul 4X8 sheets of plywood. Plywood will fit across with no problem but you'll have to leave the hatch open and use some straps to keep it from sliding out the back. I've hauled everything from kids to table saws to 50 large bags of mulch in the back of ours and it never lets me down in size or power. I keep a few packing blankets in the back just in case I need to haul something dirty.
This is my third Ford truck and, like the others, the interior has held up very well. There are no rattles or squeaks or funny noises. I really like the instrument panel. Everything is well within reach and easy to use. Even the stereo is pretty darn good. For a family vehicle it rocks out pretty well. :)
