I use to own a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport 2 door. This car was fantastic. The only problem I had with that vehicle was a fuel sensor, and it was a pleasure to drive.
I am in the art business so i needed a bigger vehicle to haul paintings and bronzes, and the new Explorers are smaller than my 2001 sport. So I decided to go with a 2003 Expedition Eddie Bauer. This SUV is amazing. The ride is smooth, the cabin is quiet, the interior blows away every SUV in this price range. Basically its a Navigator with out the bull that push it price wise out of the market. I dont know why people complain about the gas, my 2001 Explorer Sport with the 4.0 engine ate up $32.00 in gas every four days, where as the Expedition takes $45.00 to fill the beast and it last about six days on a tank of gas and i drive 60 miles a day to work and back combined. Yes its more expensive in gas than a Honda, but its a V-8 and it has balls.
I drove the Expedition with the 5.4 engine and it had less top end than the 4.6 but the 5.4 Triton is made for towing and I decided that the 4.6 gets better gas mileage and I am not going to use this vehicle for towing. But as far as the 4.6 engine its plenty of get up and go for highway and city driving. If you compare it to a Hemi, the Hemi is going to go faster and its going to cost you $65.00 dollars a week in gas, I quess thats the trade off.
The only problems I have noticed is that the rims have a coating that is flaking off, which is poor quality. The in-dash 6 disc changer Audiophile doesnt pump sound like the older stock systems. Thats because in 2001 most of the higher end stereos in ford were put out by Pioneer, now they are some off brand. Back in the day Fords used Clarion to build there stereos. Back up mirror motors needed to be replaced buts thats about all. Ford always has little quirks with there vehicles, but once they fix them under warranty they are good to go. All in all great vehicle and cant wait to see what they change in 2008.
