Product Review

A basic monitor - all you really need

by   missyteila ,   Nov 30, 2003

Pros:  Basic, easy-to-use, inexpensive, good reception

Cons:  Drains batteries, leave plugged in, not for large homes (static)

The Bottom Line:  Great inexpensive monitor to do the basic job of monitoring your baby while you are in another room or outside, really this is all you need

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I registered for this monitor after researching all the other monitors because it served my basic needs, and was not overly complicated with too many gadgets. I didn't need another source of entertainment for my baby, no stars on ceiling, no music, nothing, just a basic monitor.

When my daughter was born, I put the monitor together and found it quite simple to do. I put the monitor in her room and carry the receiver around the house with me. I put the base on her dresser, you should NEVER put it directly in the crib with the baby. The monitor has a power indicator light to tell you that it is on and working.

This monitor is sensitive enough to pick up every single sound. I can hear my baby breathe at night time, as well as it will pick up the sound of the heater or the air conditioner. The lights on the monitor illuminate whenever any sound is present, so I would not rely on looking at the lights to see if your little one is active or not, because it could be some other background noise that the monitor is picking up (musical mobile, air conditioning, dog barking, etc)

The receiver is portable, but I keep mine plugged in the majority of the time because it really can drain batteries fast otherwise. The receiver takes one 9-volt battery.

The only other problem that I find is that sometimes, if I am in a room too close to my daughters, I do get a little bit of feedback in the monitor and it makes a terrible squealing noise. Generally if I am in the next room, I turn the monitor off anyhow since I have her door open and I can hear whatever is going on in her room.

I have heard that some people have some static with their monitors, but I have never had that problem. It might depend on the size of the house too. This monitor is not intended for very large houses, our house is approximately 1,200 sq feet and we use it with perfect reception, even if I'm outside doing gardening or yard work. However, I can understand in a large house how there could be some static if you go too far away with the monitor. I have tried to walk to my neighbors house before with the monitor and it becomes very staticy, so I guess it must need to be within a certain range to pick up frequency. IF YOU HAVE A LARGE HOUSE, I would recommend skipping this monitor and buying the Fisher-Price Vibrating Monitor with the 900 MHz Technology that offers a longer range.

If you do have any problems with the monitor, it does have a 1 ONE YEAR LIMITED WARRANTY. It says that you can ship it back to Fisher-Price and they "will repair or replace it at our option, free of charge. Purchaser is responsible for shipping of the product".

The Fisher-Price Sounds 'n Lights Monitor is also relatively inexpensive compared with the other monitors, running approximately $16-$20.
