Author's Review

I have been using the same Timberline 2 tent for many years and I have been extremely satisfied with its performance. I was given this tent as a gift when I was 15 years old and it is still in excellent shape after 10 years of regular use. Of course it has a few stains and a few patched rips and tears but I wouldn't go on any camping trip without it. I realize that the day is coming when I will have to break down and buy a new one but unless my current tent has a run in with a bear or some other brutal attack by nature, that day wont come for many years, and when it does I will definitely buy another timberline.

With the exception of the first time or two you set it up this tent is extremely easy to set up: assemble the poles, connect them to the connector tubes, attach the ridge pole, attach the tent fabric, put on the fly, and if weather makes it necessary or so inclined stake it down.

This tent provides excellent wind resistance, is extremely well ventilated, provides additional warmth and I have never woken up in the middle of the night during a storm to the feeling of water soaking into my sleeping bag.

Many of today's backpackers are more and more becoming obsessed with the weight of their gear, desperately trying to shed every ounce of unnecessary gear possible and replacing necessary gear with ultra-light replacements. Unfortunately the Timberline 2 does not yet fall into this ultra-light category. At over 7lbs it is one of the heaviest 2 person backpacking tents on the market.

The only other downside of this tent that I have found is that it has 2 small connector tubes used to connect the poles together to complete the frame seem very easy to lose or misplace. Without these you cannot set up the tent without some serious improvising. For many years I feared that eventually I would misplace one of these far from the car and be unable to set up the tent during a heavy downpour or something. My solution to this potential problem was buying a backup pair of knuckles and keep them in my pack separate from the rest of the tent, I may never need them but I know they are there if I need them in a pinch.. On a side note I recently visited the Eureka website looking at the improvements made to this tent after mine was made and I was happy to learn that all new timberline tents now have these connector tubes permanently attached to the tent body eliminating the possibility of losing one.
