Author's Review

I was bored the other day and decided to go rent a movie. I did not know what to pick up and this movie just caught my eye. At first I did not know it was made by Mel Brooks until I read the opening credits. After doing that it was made by one of the best spoof makers ever, I knew it was going to be a good movie.

Just in case you don't know Mel Brooks is the king of spoofs he has made great spoofs like Robin hood men in tights, and space balls.

In Mel Brooks version Dracula is has clumsy has he is sophisticated. The story starts when a business mans by the name of Renfield visiting Transvalnia. When the local villagers hear that he his visiting count Dracula they warn him to stay away from the castle. You just can't help but laugh at the whole gypsy who shakes her neck in order to get an echo out of it.

After meeting Renfield the count trys to make Renfield is slave, but it takes 3 trys in order for him to do it. (Renfield falls asleep before the count can finish.) The count tells also tells him he will eat bugs to sustain himself. The count then charters a boat to England, and kills of the crew. This get Renfield put in Dr. Seward’s insane asylum. Unfourtatnley for Renfield Dr. Seward’s favorite way to treat patients is by giving them enemas.
Dracula gets the chance to meet Dr. Sewards at the opera. When the counts mind control on the usher backfires he misses chance to introduce himself. Luckily he meets his assistant Jonathan, he also meets Mina and Lucy.

The count starts attacking Lucy when she goes to sleep, This gets Dr. Sewards worry so he calls in Dr. Van Helsing (Mel Brooks), a doctor who has an expertise at strange diseases and the super natural. Also an expert at grossing out his students during autopsies.

After deducing that a vampire is at work Helsing starts trying to track down the vampire. But can he catch Dracula before he can turn Lucy and Mina into vampires.

Of course this being a Mel Brooks movie, which means it does have the same formula for jokes. Which include a lot of witty puns, characters acting out of character and just plain goofy, and most of all a lot of silliness.

Here is an example of one of the jokes in the movie. At the beginning two female vampires try to jump Renfield why he is sleeping. The count enters the room and tells them to leave the room. They start flouting out of the room but when the count tells them to "stop that" the music stops and they walk out of the room. I know it doesn’t sound funny but it is when you watch the movie.

There is only one really crude joke in this movie. And it comes when Anthony and Helsing has to stake a vampire, Anthony is recruited to do the job by Helsing. After Helsing runs for cover Anthony stakes the vampire only to be covered with an over kill (pardon the pun) blood. Now all though this is a little vomit inducing what makes it funnier is when Anthony says that the vampire is still moving, and under the advice of Helsing does it again, ewe can you say messy.

This movie is probably one of the best horror spoofs ever, and its ten times better then Scary Movie.
