Diabetic Cooking Magazine: Read Recipes Carefully!

My husband has been a diabetic for years.  He managed to control his diabetes with a strict diet for several years, but in this past year he has been put on insulin shots that have increased from one shot daily to two shots daily.  He has now started following his diet more carefully.  One of the things I count on for new recipes of foods he can eat is Diabetic Cooking Magazine.  It contains some new ideas and recipes that are safe for diabetics--for the most part!

Diabetic Cooking Magazine is published bi-monthly and available on the newsstand for $3.99 per issue.  Subscribing will save you a few bucks and also guarantee that you won't miss an issue!

Each issue of Diabetic Cooking Magazine will contain recipes for breakfast, dinner, and lunch.  You will find great recipes to make a complete meal with servings of side dishes, vegetables, entrees and desserts. 

Each issue will have different themes.  Some may be the typical home cooked recipes, focus on fast and easy or a holiday theme issue for those big holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter. 

You will also find various regular departments which cover Letters from readers, recipe makeovers, nutrition, insulin, and other health related topics that concern diabetics. 

My Thoughts on Diabetic Cooking Magazine

I have found that I really have to watch the recipes in this magazine.  There are some things that I really like about it and that is where I will start. 

Likes:

Diabetic Cooking Magazine will give you recipes with ingredients that most diabetics can have.  For instance, any pasta will be substituted for wheat pasta.  While regular pasta can only be consumed in tiny amounts, my husband can have a whole serving of wheat pasta.  The wheat pasta is made from natural grains and takes longer to break down in the digestive system.  The same goes for rice.  Brown rice can be substituted for regular rice.  Ok, so why not just subsitute and never consult a cookbook?  I have the perfect answer and that is because you can find new recipes that will appeal to the diabetic in your family or life. 

The magazine is also good for helping out with sweets.  Diabetics often crave sweets but sugar free options are not always good either since they contain sugar alcohols that convert back to sugar in the digestive process.  You will find lots of recipes here that most diabetics can have.

I also like the pictures that are provided with some recipes.  If I could change anything about this magazine it would be to put a picture along with every recipe so you can get an idea of what it is supposed to look like.

Dislikes:

I have found several recipes that I totally disagree with being a proper fit for Diabetic Cooking Magazine.  One recipe that I recall is for a dessert that calls for a package of devils food cake.  You know, a typical box of cake mix?  The sugar content in most of these boxes are 20 or more grams of sugar.  This could send some diabetics into a coma.  I caution you to read the recipes thoroughly and check out any ingredients or boxed items that may be added to a recipe. 

Recommendation:

Overall, I like the variety of recipes in this bi-monthly publication.  I guess I'm not very creative when it comes to thinking up new recipes and I need help frequently.  Diabetic Cooking Magazine fills the void here.  I do caution you to read recipes thoroughly because I have run across several that shouldn't me in the magazine because of high sugar content.
