Author's Review
Though this computer does not have the outstanding gaming performance expected from a Dell XPS computer, it has more than enough features for the common user.
To start, I purchased this computer because it was LIGHTWEIGHT and affordable. At just 5.5 pounds, I knew it wouldn't be a hassle to lug through airports (like my old laptop). The AC power adapter is also lightweight- different from the bulkier, heavier others I have used. The keyboard is comfortable, and the keys are easily stroked. Dell has also included a new feature called Media Direct, where you can watch a DVD without having to turn on your computer (and waste valuable battery life). One thing about this system I didn't like at first was that I either had to get Windows Media Center Edition or pay $150 BUCKS FOR XP PRO!!! I settled for WMCE, and actually am impressed with the ease of using it. It starts up just like Windows XP, and if you want to use Media Center, you just click into that program. If you don't want to use Media Center, you don't have to. I like being given that choice. I was not too happy about not having a PCMCIA Card Slot, but hey- dell was looking into the future by installing the ExpressCard slot. For it's size, you wouldn't expect to be given 4 USB 2.0 slots and 1 Firewire, but again- Dell comes through. My currently favorite feature is the built in memory card reader. Now when I take pictures I don't have to get out the USB cable or install software, I just pop in the memory card and access my photos. This computer also came with a free DVD-RW burner, and it is a genuine Sony. The WiFi on this computer is outstanding as well. I heard that Dell places it's antenna inside the screen of the laptop for better reception. Wherever it is, it picks up wireless networks from all over! The only thing I would recommend you doing is to upgrade the memory to at least a gig. With just the 512mb it comes with, it is a bit sluggish. Also, the DIMM A socket is hard to get to if you are looking to upgrade your memory yourself (you have to take off the front plate and keyboard to get to it).
Oh, to add, for some reason Dell has decided not to ship the system drivers and Windows installation disks. If you want them you'll have to call customer support and request a copy. If you buy this computer, make sure to do this!
Overall, if you don't have gaming in mind, but do want a compact media powerhouse, this laptop is for you. You will be hard up to find an equal laptop for a better price!
