There are certain things that you dont want to notice. Cable modems are one of those things. I like staying connected to the Internet and when Im not, I tend to take notice. There are very few things that will prevent me from being online. Power outages will do it, as well as a cable outage. The only other potentially missing link is the aforementioned cable modem
What a cable modem does is to allow your computer to access the Internet using the same cable line that you watch TV over. The advantage of this is that you can access information at a much greater speed. I dont know exactly how it works, but it does. (Ive learned that some things, I just have to accept and not ask too many questions because it doesnt really matter.)
One day, we decided to get Internet through Comcast. They had some special deal if you got a D-Link cable modem. We went for the DCM-202 because of some sort of rebate deal. (As rebates usually go, we didnt get everything, but thats another story.) D-Link seemed to be a good brand.
As I said, you dont want to notice the cable modem. It was fairly easy to get set up, but I recall having problems getting connected initially. After calling Comcast, we eventually got it working. During the first few months, we had a few intermittent problems with the Internet going out. Id call and be told to unplug the modem and plug it back in. This would usually work, but not always. Not wanting to get a new modem, we were happy with getting service 95% of the time.
Im now pretty convinced that the problems are on Comcasts end, as we usually lose Internet whenever we lose the Cable. Its been a few years and, aside from writing this review, I havent had much reason to think about the modem. When I can get a picture on TV, I can also access the Internet with very few exceptions.
Weve had it for a few years now. I really couldnt ask for more in terms of speed. Most pages load up without delay. (This makes posting, reading and rating reviews much easier.) I do occasionally get delays, but this could be due to many reasons, such as heavy user load. Its been reliable since those first few months.
From what I see in other reviews, other people have had it suddenly stop working. Id hate to see it go out, but I do think weve gotten our moneys worth out of it. Its able to handle big downloads without crapping out. Its able to stay connected for long periods of time. Its way better than dialup. Im surprised that the people reviewing it on Epinions either love or hate it. For the price, its very good.
