Nice printer for printing CD's

by   realorganized ,   Nov 19, 2004

Pros:  Good for printing CD's

Cons:  Would not recommend for anything else due to high consumables cost.

The Bottom Line:  Getr it for the CD printing but buy a color laser printer if you want to print lots of color.

Author's Review

I picked up this printer because of it's ability to print CD's. It does that and is quite nice at it. It's also a good general printer and can also print photo quality images as well as it has 6 colors. The price is right and there are drivers for Mac and PC and it seems to work just fine for both platforms (I have both kinds of machines.

That's the good news. The bad news is that you will get eaten alive in consumables costs. There are 6 inkjet cartridges and each costs around $12, so you can spend $75 in printer cartridges for a $99 printer.

I ended up doing some large print jobs over these past 2 months and I can say this about the printer - it really chews through these cartridges. The cartridges are pretty thin like about 1/2 an inch thick. They have some kind of special chip in them, so even the no-name generic cartridges are expensive. Additionally, they have some kind of sensor which "detects" how empty your cartridge is. It doesn't do a very good job and I have had cases where my cartridge clearly has ink in it but the printer will refuse to print.

I got about 800 pages of black and white printing with the black cartridge and about the same with color cartridges when printing web kinds of color pages.

The reason why I got this printer is so I could print CD labels and it does that quite nicely. There is one caveat, however - to print a label on a CD you need to use their special sofware. This is akward because I already had photoshop templates that I was using and would have preferred being able to do that. In my case, I was using a Mac, so it may be different on a PC.
