Showing its age, but well worth the money

Date of Review:  Mar 24, 2009
The Bottom Line:

This is a great speacialized lens for the landscape/wildlife photographer, and is likely to be very good for the sports photographer as well.

Review: Canon is known for their world class "L" Series optics, and the reputation is well deserved.  In fact, it was that red line on the end of the lenses that drove me to choose Canon over Nikon.  My initial purchase included three "L" Series lenses...

It will do for me!

Date of Review:  Apr 2, 2004
Review: My first excursion into a seriously expensive lens and I am overjoyed at the results.
Have today just taken delivery of the Canon2x convertor and although this does not allow autofocus you have to
see the results to believe them.

High quality, durable, a great general purpose zoom tele-lens for off-hand or tripod shooting.

Date of Review:  Jul 3, 2004
The Bottom Line: If you want top quality, expect to pay for it. This lens IS top quality and rugged. Definitely for me, a keeper.
Review: I've been using this lens almost daily for nearly 2 months now and I am liking it very much. I was a bit put off at first by the push-pull zoom until I discovered its great benefit for those times where you need a quick offhand shot in conditions...

A must for serious wildlife photographers

Date of Review:  Feb 28, 2008
The Bottom Line: I recommend this lens to anyone who is serious about photography that requires keeping a distance (for me that's wildlife). It's well worth the investment.
Review: Years ago I had built up quite the Minolta collection - complete with a 100mm-400mm lens that I loved. Alas, the age of digital came upon us and I was forced to switch over. Given the cost of that, the zoom lens I went with for years was the Tamron...

Great Lens for Airshow Photography

Date of Review:  Nov 18, 2004
The Bottom Line: It's a great lens for outdoor zoom action photography, with powerful zoom and great image quality
Review: I bought this lens after using Canon's EF f3.5-5.6L 28-300mm IS USM lens because I felt I needed a bit more "oomph" to get the shots I wanted. I used it at one airshow, and the results showed it's strengths in this area. It was also significantly...

Good lens but shape up your arms.

Date of Review:  May 24, 2009
The Bottom Line: If you are dedicated wildlife photographer and you have to have a zooml lens, look no further.
Review: I gathered some motivation to write a review since I used a  long time ago when I was in the "film" world of cameras. This is one top gun from Canon stable that a lot of pro photographers adore over the years. However my experience was a little...

OUTSTANDING lens!!

Date of Review:  Mar 24, 2008
The Bottom Line: Buy it. Yes, it's an investment- But it's quality optical equipment, and it'll last you forever if you take care of it
Review: Typical of 'L' series lenses- this is a great, super sharp lens that is HIGHLY recommended! I have never used a better piece of equipment.

I shoot wildlife- Birds for the most part. I like to shoot handheld, because I get a lot of...

A serious lens for serious photographers!

Date of Review:  Dec 6, 2006
The Bottom Line: If you are serious about sports or wildlife photography, this a very useful lens.
Review: This lens is a major purchase, as the typical retail price is $1,400. However, if you are keen on sports or wildlife photography the price is fully justified.

The image quality is superb, very sharp, great colours. I first used this lens...

An amateur buys a pro lens

Date of Review:  Jun 24, 2000
