Product Review

Mostly great but one tiny little issue...

by   pgitta ,   Dec 26, 2004

Pros:  Very handy for converting and calculating architectural measurements. I use it constantly.

Cons:  Precision level needs to be monitored closely, rounding measurements can make for ugly surprises.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

...It makes mistakes! Well sort of. Read on...

I couldn't believe it. I used the heck out of this thing finishing my basement. Estimating 2X4s needed, carpet, etc. I loved every minute of it-until I ruined an expensive piece of maple in a woodworking project. I needed to find the center of a piece 26 3/32" long. In I punch the numbers, and out comes 13 1/8"

Now I clear and enter 3/16 divided by 2 and get 1/16!!!

So it appears to be in error, but after contacting the manufacturer, I was told different levels of precision can be set.

Be sure to set the device to the level you require, or you may be shopping for more materials like I did. Not sure why it couldn't just default to it's maximum precision, but I suppose if you're framing a wall, it would tend to get annoying getting 1/64" increments.

Heck, the union carpenters that built my house really didn't appear to have any use for more precision than an inch or so give or take.
