Author's Review
I purchased this color laser printer a little over 2 weeks ago and have been very pleased with it so far. The color print quality is fantastic. It has a 2400x600 dpi resolution (64MB expandable to 512mb) and it really shows when printing graphics, text, and photos. The color accuracy and detail matches very closely to my screen w/o even tinkering with the color calibration settings. Not to mention it also prints 31ppm in black and 8ppm color. Most printers around this price point are usually 1200x600 dpi and print much slower.
Installation is a breeze with the machine. I have it installed on my home network and the installation software recognized the printer over the network almost immediately. I simply added the drivers to all my other PC's and I can print from any computer in my home. In addition, the web-based interface allows me cancel print jobs or change printer settings from any computer on the network. You can simply enter the interface and change all the settings w/o having to run over to the machine.
The only difficult part of the printer is finding where to buy it. The printer is relatively new and was just released at the end of Jan. 2004. Most brick and mortar stores dont have it in stock. When I took a look at the specs from brother.com, I began searching for a place to buy it from. It took me few weeks to find an online store who had it in stock. Anyhow, I'm really happy that I waited b/c I dont think other color lasers can compare to this one when judging the price/performance ratio.
If the printer had an additional multipurpose tray I would have to give it a perfect 10. Unless you purchase an additional lower tray, you have to use only one tray to print from. It's not so bad, but having a multipurpose tray would make it easier when printer envelopes and labels. Nonetheless, the positives sure outweigh the negatives for this printer.
I plan on writing a little review for the consumables later on since I have not had to change them yet. They are rated very high so it may be a while; Black 10,000 pgs and each of the colors for 6,000 pgs. In the box you get starter cartridges but they are still rated pretty high. Black is 5,000 pages and colors are 3,000 pages.
