Super comfy for baby, not so much for mom!
Date of Review: Jan 7, 2004
The Bottom Line: This carrier has many fine points, but I'm not sure if it's worth the price, aggravation of trying to get baby in and out, and painfulness of the straps.
I purchased the Baby Bjorn Extra Large Straps Baby Carrier for a couple of reasons. I had been hearing for years how superior Baby Bjorn is to other brands. I had heard tales of its incredible comfort and durability. A variety of people would be using the carrier, most of whom had larger frames, so this was the carrier that I chose. Now I m not certain that it was worth the nearly $100 sticker price. I wonder if we could have gotten something comparable or even better for a considerably lower price.
The Baby Bjorn Extra Large Straps Baby Carrier is designed for people who wear a Large XXLarge shirt size. The straps are easily adjustable, so that fit our needs perfectly. The manufacturer tested weight limit is from 8 25 lbs. The padded cover is machine washable, a definite plus for the occasional spit up attack! (Machine wash warm, separately).
When baby is younger, wear with baby s face toward you. As baby grows and is able to hold her head more steadily, you may wear with the baby facing forward so that she can see the world . The Baby Bjorn Extra Large Straps Baby Carrier holds baby very snugly (my younger daughter, now 6 months, loves being held tightly) and promotes closeness and comfort for baby. The carrier appears to be very comfortable for the baby with all of its extra padding.
I do have some serious negative issues with the Baby Bjorn Extra Large Straps Baby Carrier that may outweigh any benefits. Right off the bat, do I even have to mention that the price is a negative selling point. We paid $92 (pre-tax) for it. Most of the other soft carriers for sale were half that cost. Also, the carrier is quite difficult to manipulate with just one person. Getting baby in and out is not an easy task at all.
Even when my baby was still very young and VERY light, the straps would dig into my back and shoulders and become painful within a few minutes of wearing. So perhaps it is comfortable for baby, but definitely not for mom.
I stopped using the carrier personally after only a few tries because of the pain that it caused me in my back. My mother still uses it on occasion, but now she is starting to complain of similar pains. This is probably because my daughter is now 6 months old and 21 pounds. She is creeping up to that upper weight range.
