The Bottom Line:
Mabooks are a bit more expensive than the Windows counterparts, but they do just work.

I work in the technical support department of a major university, because of that I have to be proficient on PCs running Windows as well as Macs. I have to say that if I had a choice for a personal machine it would be a Macbook with OS X.
This was purchased for me as my new Macintosh through work, it has quickly become my 'main' computer, the one that goes home with me and that I use for everything.
I have not had any problems so far. This was purchased for me in September and it's not February and I've been using it constantly. Most of the time I don't turn it off, I just close the lid and let it hibernate. It responds quickly when I wake it.
The applications that I run on this machine are:
MS Office 2004
MS Office 2008
Photoshop CS3
Director MX 2004
Fireworks CS3
Freehand MX
Firefox
Thunderbird
Illustrator CS3
InDesign CS3
Parallels
Windows XP Pro
World of Warcraft
Pirates of the Caribbean online
With 2 GB of RAM it flies through all these applications with normal use. I am not a heavy user of most of these apps, So I can't give rendering times for enormous files in Illustrator or Director. I have done some large files in Photoshop and I have not had a problem with lag.
The Airport is zero configuration, it sees a network and asks if you want to join. If it requires a WEP key for security it will ask for it.
The keyboard is perfect for me, but I don't have overly large hands so it might be a problem for others. It's too bad that only the MacBook Pro's have the backlit keyboard.
I do have some complaints about the shell, which you can scratch just by looking at it and the keyboard might be on the small side for some. It could be more durable and it does scratch easy. As far as being reliable - it's very reliable and OS X is one of the best OS's out there.
It only has 2 USB ports, I'd like more, and it doesn't have a card reader like the MacBook Pro or a PC card slot, but then again no Macs on the market have PC card slots.
