Author's Review
My husband and I are always watching out for shows that we can watch from the first season all the way to the last. He had seen a couple of episodes of this on late night TV and liked it, so we decided to take a chance on it. We rented these one by one from Netflix and haven't regretted the decision in the least. When they are over you are sad to see them go!
Sydney Bristow is a graduate student in English lit. She was recruited in college to be a secret agent for a company named SD-6 which is a black ops division of the CIA. This is her journey. In the first episode she finds out that things are not quite as they seem. SD-6 is not what she thought it was. Her father, whom she's never been very close to, is a double agent. She in turn realizes that she must follow in her father's footsteps and become a double agent who is really working for the CIA. Throughout this whole season, her goal is to eliminate SD-6. She doesn't realize that this will be harder than she thinks. She must execute missions by SD-6 while actually working for the CIA and not being discovered.
The plots involved in these episodes are extremely intricate. Each episode connects to the next episode, however most of the time you do get a little bit of closure in the episode. I don't want to say too much about each episode because of how intricately connected they are. One things that is so enjoyable about this show is being able to discover how it all works yourself. If I gave you a more in depth summary, it would ruin that aspect of the show. The great thing about this is the way it keeps you on the edge of your seat!
The acting in this show is first rate. You can tell that the characters have a chemistry, and you really feel that they are who they are pretending to be. Jennifer Garner plays Sydney Bristow. Ron Rifkin plays the bad guy Arvin Sloane, and he does a fabulous job of portraying the character. Victor Garber is Sydney's dad Jack Bristow, and the father/daughter relationship between the two is quite interesting.
What I really love about this is the wonderfully intricate stories involved in this show. Each episode has its own plot, but they are all connected together as well. Sometimes there is more of a cliffhanger than other episodes, but you'll always be on the edge of your seat. The acting is superb in this which is just one more thing about it to love. I enjoy the intrigue, but I also enjoy that it's not your usual spy plot. There are definitely twists and turns along the way in this one.
As far as the negatives go, there really aren't that many. Sometimes the story lines, as I've sad, are very intricate. It can be difficult to follow at times. Also there are the cliffhanger endings. I know that these can get on people's nerves. The only other thing would be that occasionally Sydney wears outfits that are somewhat revealing. Even that is pretty minimal though.
All in all, this is a great series for you to watch. It's suspenseful and yet fun. It's involved and intricate, but so wonderful to be a part of. You'll enjoy it; I'm sure of it.
