Author's Review
Since many of the other reviews on here have already touched on the storyline, I will not elaborate too much on the actual plot in this review; instead I will just say why this is a MUST get DVD set.
ALIAS caught my eye when it first broad-casted. As far as I know, there aren't many good spy shows on TV (if any), and ALIAS helped fill this gap. I am really glad that ABC took a chance with this series despite the fact the network has been getting some bad reps in recent years for poor performing television dramas. J.J. Abrams, the executive director for this series writes an amazing story and after watching the first episode, I was instantly hooked.
Watching ALIAS and waiting week-to-week for the new episodes is just as exciting as reading Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. The action moves around, is fast paced and non-stop; and at the end of every episode/chapter you're left wanting more. After seeing all the cool places that the story features, I actually want to learn the various languages so I can travel to the different hot spots that the show brings up.
In addition to having a beautiful lead actress (Jennifer Garner) who looks good in pretty much any outfit, the overall story that ALIAS unfolds is exciting and interesting. Within this show, you can probably find a piece of yourself in one of a number of diverse characters that the show presents. For most of the characters in the show, we follow their professional lives, personal lives and are involved in their relationships. All of the characters are multi-dimensional and they are all very well developed to help bring the whole story together. One of the greatest things I love about this show are the cameos and how all of the characters are tough yet also able to feel pain and happiness. It's nothing like the cheesy Bond flicks where Bond shoots off one-liners and gets the girl every time.
Unfortunately, ALIAS is a drama series that builds up from previous episodes therefore if you were to jump into the middle of the series in season 2 or 3, it would be hard to follow (and enjoy) without the proper introduction to the story's background.
During season 2, I've hosted many viewing parties for my friends and luckily for them I had a copy of this DVD set and they were all able to catch up with the first season within a matter of days. Yes, all of them were so hooked on to the series that they managed to sit through 6 DVD's in just 7-10 days. (This is how good this series is!!!) Looking back, I wish I could have done the same thing instead of sitting through weeks of waiting and re-runs but in all honesty, I do not regret any moment I have spent watching or waiting for this show. I've introduced the series to many of my friends and watched the first episodes more times than I should have; now that I just got a new HDTV with 16:9 ratio, maybe I will revisit the series again with a new perspective. =)
My roommate had said, if you like 24, you will like this show. I honestly think no matter what type of drama you enjoy, you will like this show after seeing the first episode.
With season 3 just released and season 4 coming later this year, there's no better time like now to familiarize yourself with the first three seasons of ALIAS before season 4 comes on. If you don't think it's worth buying, just rent the first two discs from Blockbuster or Netflix. I promise you won't be disappointed and you will probably end up buying all three seasons.
While the first season DVD set lacked goodies, it does do an excellent job of showing the show in wide screen format and Dolby surround sound. Since I was not able to get all of that when the show first aired OTA, this is a great set to have to revisit the show in its true-to-life form.
I think within my DVD collection, ALIAS is by far my favorite series. If you're looking for a cool show to watch with your family and friends while waiting for all the Fall shows to appear, give this series a chance. As much as I love in-show cliff-hangers, I wouldn't want the future of this series to be a cliff-hanger. With the seemingly decrease in ABC's audience, I hope this show will make the cut for many seasons to come.
